I need help with this protien shake thing post op

I really need some help. I am going in for my VSG on Tuesday and I don't have
a clue on what type of protien shakes I should get. I have read that a lot of you
use Click and some go to Poppey's? The only thing I was told by Laure was
to get Protien shakes with Whey in them. I seen this huge container at Costco
but I am afraid to get something soooo big and what if I don't like it. I made my
pureeaed stuff but I totally forgot about the shakes because I am kinda sick
of the optifast right now.

Can I get some advise as I am feeling real lost right now?

Thanks, Robynjoy

I have been wondering this myself...I have not had my surgery yet, but want to get a start on finding the right shakes and buy them slowly now so that it won't come as big expense all at once.

A friend of mine gave me half of her container of Whey Protein powder flavored vanilla.  I tried a scoop of it with 8oz. of water it didn't taste too bad, was hard to get it to disolve.

I also tried a scoop in a blender with some fat free frozen yogurt (chocolate) some fat free milk and a tablespoon of peanutbutter (my downfall I am a peanutbutter junkie), don't know if this is allowed post o*****t.

Yeh, that's what I have read on here. Thanks, right now I feel that I have the old
chicken with your head cut off syndrom. It's getting down to the wire and I would
like to have something on hand since we live an hour out of town. I don't think
my hubby would be  to happy to run to the city just for shakes.

Popeyes is reasonably priced, and they let you sample the flavours..
That might help.

Robynjoy, I picked up some Vanilla Whey protein at walmart which is pretty high in protein and low in sugar. It was called Pure Protein, 100% whey. I also have Beneprotein UNFLAVOURED which I use a lot to add to soups. I found it on line at www.well.ca. If you order 2, you can use coupon codes 3993e034f2 or if that one has already been used, try code # 852d143be6 and it will take $10.00 off. They are $25.00 each. The only other place I found the Beneprotein is at Tache Pharmcy and it is $23.00 there, so not much difference and actually ends up cheaper online with the coupon of $10.00 off. I would definitely suggest the UNFLAVOURED as the vanilla really changes the taste of food if you are adding it for extra protein to try to make your daily goal, and that is very hard to meet in the first few weeks. I have added the vanilla protein (1 tbsp) to things like cream of wheat and coffee to give me a bit of extra protein too. Hope this helps..Barb C

I just tried the ice tea protein mix and didn't much care for it.  I am going to try it again in a blender and with a little lemon on the side.  I'm in the experimenting stage as well but we are VERY limited  in any kind of protein powders where I am from, so I need to get my ducks in a row before I get to the city.  Let us know if you find any good protein shake additives - the frozen banana in chocolate optifast was great but not sure how legal that is ....... and the vodka.... joking ..... sort of ....

Thanks everyone, I think I might try Popeye's if they give you a sample taste you
know what you are getting.
Granny, the banana sounds great and the vodka I could probably use the night
before surgery (lol) You are right we need to get our ducks in a row before we
go to the city.
Sooooo many decisions. bak, bak, bak chicken with my head cut off lol

I don't think you will be ready for protien shakes for a few weeks post op. I wasn't, guess I was still getting over 2 weeks pre op of the optifast.   I have been buying the store brand from Target for whey protein in vanilla and chocolate and adding my own flavourings to it and it's good.  It is low sugar, lower carbs and 25 gr of protein per scoop.  I make it with frozen fruit and sometimes add yogurt to the vanilla and blend it in the blender.   The chocolate I add some coffee powder and/or some sugar free flavourings like caramel or vanilla and just shake them up in a blender cup I got from Tupperware ( gravy shaker I think it is)  then pour it over ice and drink it icey cold. Oh and I make them with 1% milk for the added protein.  I like the Torani sf flavours that I get at Walmart in Grand Forks but Starbucks has sf flavours too that are about $10 for a big bottle and lots of flavours.  I think Walmart here carry a generic whey protein powder too that seems very similar to the one I get at Target.  But I have heard that Popeye's will let you tast them.  I have read that some people add some crystal light fruity flavours to the vanilla but I prefer to add real frozen fruit.
I am 6 weeks post op and had my follow up with Laura the Nutritionist today and she says she would like me to use the shakes less, I have been having one every morning for breakfast ) maybe every other day and get more carbs and grains in.  Also dairy twice per day so milk on cereal or in the shake and yogurt as a mid afternoon snack.  I was shocked when she said try for more carbs.  I have been averaging 3-4 lbs loss per week but that includes the optifast weeks and she wants me to slow down to 1-2 lbs per week so as not to increase the risk of gall stones and kidney stones.

Early days I had lots of broth...nice change from sweet shakes then some cream soups.  Sugar free jello, pudding, yogurt, applesauce and added the non flavoured beneprotein into them.  My local pharmacy stocks it but you can get it online too.

For the peanut butter fan...the Aitkins Advantage Chocolate Peanut Butter bars are amazing....but not til you're on solid foods.  16 gr of protein, 1 gr of sugar but 220 calories.  I can only eat about a third of a bar right now as a late afternoon snack but they are amazing.  I also got some Planters all natural pb at Target in the states that doesn't need stirring and it is really good.

Hope that helps!

Wow Alle,

Thanks sooooooo much. I really, really appreciate the information. I think I will
wait until after my surgery to buy my shakes. I am all ready for my liquid diet
I have blended up some stuff and put it in the freezer but not too much as
it is easy to blend up something to mush. This is info that is sooo good as
it teaches me what I am going to be doing in the near future.  You are soooo
right about the Optifast shakes they are too sweet for me. It wont be to soon
if I never drink one after the surgery. The chi tea in vanilla helps kill the
sweetness.

I am sooo grateful for everyone that contributes on this site because this
has educated me in sooo many ways. I just wish I would have known
about it 2 years ago if it wasn't for Dr Grosko I would still be in the dark
and feeling lost and alone. The support on this site is worth it's weight
in Gold!!! You can't get better advice than from someone who has been
there and done that plus has the small T shirt to prove it. I can hardly wait to
meet you's as I want to give you all a big hug. I have sooo much respect for
the people here as they are willing to step out of their comfort zone to help.

Thanks again. I hope I am well enough to make it to the meet and greet on the
7th. But from what I hear I should be able to as long as I have water to sip.

Take care, Robynjoy
