Couple of questions
For shopping did you use canadian money or switch to pesos?
Someone I know thinks you can't excange back from pesos to canadian if you don't use it all.

If I leave mexico a day early and stay a day or 2 in San Diego, any recomendations on where to stay?

How long did it take to cross border back to US?
Any problems comming back?

1.  Shopping, take American.. they will accept it everywhere, and then you can switch back.
I had 400 pesos left over when I got home and the bank wont take it back.  I brought 750 pesos with me and 100 in US but really didn't spend anything. If Trish takes you she will take you shopping at a place that has good knockoff handbags and watches and jewelery, so if you are into that, I would recommend that you bring more than I did.  My companion got a Michael Koors (sp?) purse and a Channel Watch and it cost her 140 US.  If you plan on going to Duty Free, don't wait for the San Deigo Airport, they don't have one :(  I found out the hard way.

2. Ask Madeline where she stayed in San Diego, she was impressed.

3.  Crossing the border back into US was easy.  We had a medical pass that got us through the line up faster.  It took about 20 minutes, but they say sometimes it's much longer (up to 3 hours).  The Medical lane takes you past HUGE MASSIVE lineups!

4. No Problems coming back at all!

Ditto everything Justmest said! Im still kicking myself that I didnt buy a purse!!! Just keep all your documents handy for when you need to produce them. We didnt bother with duty free, although I wanted to, but I was worried about line ups and at that point, I just wanted to get home.

In San Diego, we stayed at the San Diego Sheraton Marina. It was one we got on hotwire for 80.00 a night. Very nice hotel and really close to the airport, free shuttle. Really comfy kingsize bed but no in-room free wifi. I thought that was a bit of a strike against them and I could certainly see that in lower end hotels but whatever. (especially if you are not paying the hotwire rate) If I was just on a holiday I wouldnt have cared but for this, I didnt feel like sitting in the lobby to catch up  with my kids. But honestly, no big deal, just a heads up.
That day we were there they just started their summer bus tour and for $1.00 you could take a scenic bus tour around the area and the driver points out great things to take note of. It was really fantastic because there was no way I could walk that. you can get off at any point to sightsee or go to any of the fish restaurants and then just wait for the next bus to come to pick you up.
One note for sure, its very windy and cool down by the water so make sure you have a jacket. We were freezing!
We ate in their dining room when we got back because I wanted to be close to the room just in case my guts acted up. We sat overlooking the marina and my husband had the fresh salmon and said it was the best he's ever had. I had asked for plain broth, which they did not have, but the chef had no problem making some just for me. Very impressed with that. The waiter even asked if I would prefer room temperature water which really surprised me as that is the only way I can drink it right now.

We only took American money as that seemed the easiest. Absolutely no problem getting back home.  Our flight left at 6:18 in the morning and we got to the airport at 4:30 and there was already a huge line-up. It was a Saturday so not sure if that makes a difference. But they had people in place to direct and move people along and that too went very smoothly. We didnt need to eat at the airport but I know jusmest said she couldnt find broth there so make sure you eat before you get to the aiport, depending on the time of your flight.

I think that covers most of it..if you think of anything else, just ask!
