10 days and Oh My!

So..
May 19th started pre-op diet lost 5 lbs and then today, exactly 1 week since surgery Ive lost 13 pounds for a total of 18 pounds in 10 days! And I had the energy yesterday to bake my husband his favorite chocolate cake for his birthday which they all had with ice cream and I had 1 tsp grape jello. Just baking and frosting and  the cake was enough for me, no temptation to have any but the toast someone made the other morning smelled divine, lol. Weird how some things are now post surgery..

I can honestly feel a difference in my body, not all bloated feeling. Its awesome! However, still trying to sort out what all the gurgles me..gas?..acid? hunger? Im  still taking the acid reducer from the doctor just in case. Havent had any pain meds since 2 day after surgery.

Anyway,  today, I just need to concentrate on the amount of liquid I get in, currently only about 44-48 ounces of either plain water, pear or apple jus, tea, a 2 oz popsicle, and then vegetable or chicken broth maybe 6 ounces twice a day. Im kinda feeling like I need more..for those farther along than me, does this sound about right? I may try a bit of either a cream soup or a protein shake today and see how that sits. Anyone with advice please jump in.

 Hey Madeline,

Great Job!! I had tried cream of wheat in skim milk, and an egg white pureed; those sat well, but I am back to clears because it was harder to get fluids in after that.  SO, now I have my low salt broth but wont touch that until after I drink this bottle of water.

I put 4 in the fridge everynight before I go to bed. I have made it my job to drink one bottle before I get any broth or jello, I give myself a break for an hour and try to start on the second bottle. I can take bigger sips now, so it takes me less time to get my water in.. it's nice :) I had that ONE cup of coffee, but it was harsh on my stomach, and I only drank about 1/2 of it.  I will try coffee again in a week, maybe two.   I feel like I am just winging it now... lol

Hiya Justmest!

Thats kinda how Im feeling too..I guess we just have to try things out and see how they sit..and remember that the insides are still healing. I can drink more now too and dont feel every sip running down. Ijust tried 4 ounces of water with half a scoop of protein shake and so far so good. It stopped the gurgles.Im really wanting the soup phase so that I can get a few bites of cr of mush soup..just something other than clear broth. Ive made some homemade stuff yesterday and its delicious but not what I want right now.
I dont think Im going to quite follow our doctors plan as Im not mentally ready to add fruit and pieces of chicken quite as early as he seems to suggest. Im going to work through the phases that I have seen others here do, mushies and pureed etc.

Great job on the weight loss too..you must feel amazing. Too bad about the coffee though..all in good time, right?

Hey Ladies, you guys sound like you're doing well and are doing things sensibly.  For me I did broths for a couple of days, and then I needed to add in something with more substance.  That's when I started following my cravings a bit.  For me it was tomato soup, some cottage cheese, finely chopped egg with low fat mayo, tinnd salmon with low fat mayo and yes mashed baked beans.  Even just a couple of teaspoonfuls made a big difference to feeling satisfied.
Good luck experimenting.

Hey Alle,

Do you know if it makes a difference if you have VSg over RNY as far as being able to tolerate certain foods? I see that quite early on you added something more substantial, which is what I have done today, but am quite nervous about how it will sit? Did you have any problems with your choices?

The gurgles for me never went away.  I always have to watch eating and drinking before business meetings or else the whole room will hear my stomic!  I also found that my taste and cravings changed drastically after the surgery.  I was never hungry so it was so much easier to make a healthy choice when you eat because you need nurishment as opposed to eating cause you are starving!.

Not sure about the differences between VSG and RNY for diet but I think I have been careful about introducing new foods.  Everything I read in my nutrition info says you can try something new slowly.  Take a small amount and wait to see how it settles.  If it's ok take another.  As soon as you feel any discomfort, stop and if it's really not good, go back to softer food for a day then try again.  I have been very fortunate in that I have had very little discomfort or problems so far.  But things change, I am now having a bit of fun trying to figure out a breakfast routine.  I am going back to work ( on a very reduced workload) on Saturday so I need to get mornings figured out.  Today I could only eat half an egg and had to stop.  Mid morning I tried a new cereal I bought.  Ka****oasted berry crisp, protein and fibre cereal.  That was great, had 1/2 cup with some skim milk and no problems.  I tried a small amount of it dry last night and it was just fine

It seems a trial and success or trial and error program.  I think it's different for everyone.  Good luck and have fun experimenting.
