Went for physical today all is well, asked doc for referral for my DS surgery in Mexico for income tax purposes and to see if blue cross will cover. She has referred me to manitoba program and to Dr.Nohr in Medicine hat, I am too heavy for both. She now sends me to an endocrinologist, I bet this will take awhile (my surgery is booked for June 14) looks like I go with no referral. she also said manitoba health will probably not cover me for any problems that may arise from having the surgery. is this a problem for anyone who has had RNY or VSG in Mexico?
Ughhhh Drs eh.... I think part of what she is doing is a scare tactic. You would be covered here if you have complications. Why wouldnt you? We pay for complications of all sorts of things that people do to themselves even. The only issue that I can imagine manitoba health not maybe covering is a mediflight back if you needed it .... stuff like that.
My dr just needed a list of what labs I wanted or needed checked. He checked my incisions and how they were healing etc.

my doc also told me she referred someone to manitoba program who met all the requirements and yet she was still refused. (seems weird) also she has a patient that is having problems with a breast implant she had done somewhere else and mb health is giving her problems. ( Manitoba Health minister needs a really BIG slap on the hand) sorry still venting signed, big like Baloo

I just thought of something else. What about people who migrate here from other countries, once they are citiizens does manitoba health refuse to cover their problems if they are from surgeries from elsewhere? I DOUBT iT. I called manitoba health the girl said my doctor should know. made a few more calls wound up talking to Andrea from Manitoba program she said the doctors here wouldn't even see me. (If I smoked I would put that in my pipe and smoke it) still venting
My mom just told me last night that one of her friends went to Mexico for weight loss surgery last year.....came home....got really sick. Unsure what her complications were but they wouldn't touch her here. She was rushed back to mexico and was hospitalized there for 4 weeks at her expense of 40000+.

Well I am not feeling all warm and fuzzy about this, but I am going to have my surgery anyway. If there turns out that there is complications later I can't go back. I have to take the risk and hope for the best.
It amazes me that Mb Health would refuse service for a procedure done out of province/country when we can't get the help we need/want in Manitoba. I'm thinking a good lawyer might be able to help with that should the need ever arise.
I have always been proud of living in Manitoba but it frustrates me that we live in such a backward province when it comes to healthcare. I need a hysterectomy but my gyn won't touch me cuz I'm too fat. I'm too fat for weightloss surgery, etc etc.... Seems to me if I am willing to put in the work to regain my health and my life then the services should be available in my home province without having to take out loans, sell my children etc to get the money I would need.

Im sorry as i know alot of people will not agree with my view , yes i know there is along wait but the service is avaible here in mb , I DO NOT agree with the wait times and belive thats the issue at hand but my concern is if everyone goes eleswere does that show mb health there is not a need here for the program to exsist when i belive the need is for them to address the wait times more and they will see there are alot of people waiting and wanting this surgery ? Again i know most people will not agree with my view and it ****** me off to no end that this wait time if so freakin long and i dont understand the point of that , as i am very eager to have my WLS done as well .
I actually agree with your view, Icy. I was refused here as well and I was one of the first group of applicants. I got to the point where I decided that if I want surgery here, I have to push to make changes and that's what I'm doing. The wait list and restrictions to the MB program are definitely ridiculous but I agree that if people just go elsewhere it doesn't necessarily show the need to expand here. I only have another 23 pounds to lose before my BMI is 47. I'm hoping that by the fall I can be accepted and put into the queue.
