Apparently my barium swallow has indicated that I have mild reflux ???? WTH ??  Has anyone  who has VSG encountered this preoperatively?  I only seem to have heartburn when I eat something spicy (salsa) which affects alot of people.  Do you think this will make a difference on whether they will let me have the VSG or should I entertain the RNY???

I'm confused

I take a perscription for heartburn and it is the same thing you have just when I eat spicy foods.  My GP told me that as you lose the weight the reflux problem lessens.
They have really good meds for acid reflux.  I am sticking with the VSG.

Hope this info helps.

reflux can plague VSGers (especially those who were succeptible to it pre op) due to the smaller tummy backing up.  Once you lose some weight in the abdomen and there is less pressure on organs, it might ease up.  Some folks claim they have no troubles with it post op, others have to start medications.  Dr. Vergis asked if I had trouble with this and I said no, so I hope the result of my Barium won't affect his agreement with me to have the VSG.

Also, if anyone has suffered from reflux  pre operatively and went ahead with the VSG, please let me know if it was worse, better or made no difference.  I don't want to be thinking after "gee I wish I had known....."

thanks for honest opinions (don't be scared to scare me)

My sister is going for VSG in mexico and has heartburn issues. Dr Ponce believes she probably has a hiatal hernia and will repair it while in there.

I never had any heart burn at all before the surgery but find I do now. I can deal with it. I take meds for it and it seems to help, In a month or so I will try without the meds and see if it goes on it's own or not.

It's funny - it feels more like a "acidey stomach to me" I'll pop a tums if it seems to be bugging me but it is totally tolerable

RNY on 05/15/12
I was told by the Dr.s that the reason for having the swallow test was to check for rany eflux and if it showed that I had reflux they would not do the VSG and I would have no choice but to have RNY. I didn't hear anything about my swallow test other than the nurse helping with the test said is all seemed fine.  But as I chose RNY in the end it wasn't an issue for me.

I had the RNY, never really had reflux before and dont have it now.  Personally, i would go with the VSG it they will let you.  The vitamin ritual can be daunting with an RNY.

yes, I find the idea of long, graceful, fully functiong intestines appealing and sexy  - lol!  I just hope it (the vsg) will help me enough with the weight loss. I think, depending on the amount a person needs to lose, that that weight loss is better with RNY but  I also really like the idea of reducing the Grehlin in my system (I am pretty sure I have to much - how eles could a person eat a whole pizza? haha)

I am just a little worried about the whole reflux thing, but I have decided that I am not going to have any reflux.  so there.   haha.  AND if I do end up with RNY, I'm okay with that, I know a lot of perfectly nice people with RNY.........

thanks for the feedback people!
