I am starting my 2 weeks of Optifast tomorrow. Surgery (Sleeve) is booked for May 29th. I am not worried or scared about surgery but more worried about how I will stick to the Optifast diet for 2 weeks and then again after surgery how to stick to liquids only until my stomach heals. I have heard of horror stories of people eating things and ending up back in the hospital. Any hints to stay away from food for 3 weeks?

I really had no desire to eat while I was on liquids. I was allowed some pureed with my full liquids on my second week but most purees grossed me out. I found soups, yogurts, jello and shakes filled me up. My main concern was dehydration. 64 oz of fluid seems like a lot as you are healing and the swelling makes your sleeve smaller for awhile. The first day I had a scrambled egg , I couldn't fini**** and it sat heavy on my sleeve. I ended up getting sick that night ( it had more to do with being constipated and drinking some sweet iced tea but I now associate it with the eggs and eggs gross me out now , I used to love them!)
It will help after the surgery not being hungry - the 2 week liquid diet is much harder pre op ( I only had to do 3 days of yogurt and water - I went to mexico)

The first few days on Optifast are a little rough, but I think it's more head hunger than stomach hunger since the shakes are quite filling. By day 4 it gets easier. Just keep your eye on on the prize and know this is the means to an end. You can do it! I also had nightmarish thoughts of the surgeon refusing to do the surgery because of food particles in my stomach or discovering my liver hadn't shrunk ... that kept me on track.
As for after surgery, if you're anything like me, you won't really desire solid food for the first week or so. Just trying to get fluid in and avoiding dehydration was my main concern. I drank so many protien shakes and juices during this time, and the sweetness of them started to get to me. When I had my first spoonful of tomato soup I thought I died and went to heaven. Just make sure you have a wide variety of liquids in the house when you get home. Different juices, different flavours of protien drinks and sugar-free jellos. Chicken broth was one of my favorite things post op...Costco sells a really good organic one.
Did you have one final "farewell meal" today?
