Most of what I have read, we need to take B12 sublingual. I saw some today that was a dissolvable strip like the Listerine ones you can buy for your breath..what can anyone tell me about this? Why wouldn't you want to take it this way? Flavour, cost, effectiveness???

I haven't seen those strips.  If they don't taste good, though, I probably won't try them!  I thought I read somewhere you can dissolve the B12 pills on top of your tongue (not sure I could do that without swallowing them) instead of under it, but the ones I have don't actually say that.  My nutritionist stressed that after having a VSG I need to take the sublingual form, not chewables, because the part of the stomach that was removed is needed for absorption of B12.

Here's what I found:

The absorption of vitamin B12 depends on a protein called intrinsic factor. Intrinsic factor is a glycoprotein, a complex of polysaccharide and proteins. It's secreted by the parietal cells of the gastric glands in the stomach. Deficiency of intrinsic factor leads to the inability to adequately absorb vitamin B12. Therefore, a deficiency of intrinsic factor leads to a deficiency of vitamin B12.

I presume anyone who has had either RNY or VSG will be deficient in intrinsic factor, which is why the chewable form presumably won't work for us.

I am taking the time-released capsule. My blood tests are all coming back fine, so I seem to be getting enough.

HI, I'm Barb I have problems absorbing B-12 this is without having weight loss surgery.  I give myself a needle of B-12 intramuscular once a month 1ml. Try asking your doctor if this would be a better way to get your vitamin. hope this helps

Studies have shown that there is no advantage of getting B12 via injection over sublingual route.  Most MD's have started to prescribe it SL and not IM.  Just saying....
