RNY vs. VSG - which did you choose?
This topic totally confuses me - you think reading books and becoming more informed would help make this crystal clear. I'm just more lost now....
Can you take NSAIDS after VSG - or is it just RNY that you can't them? Aspirin, Excendrin, etc.
Surgery is getting closer - wondering (or anxiety attack?) if I've made right choice with RNY.
What were everyone's reason's for the surgery they chose?

I hear you !!!! I was in the same boat. It's one of the reasons I ended up going to mexico. I figured changing my mind would add more time ( another surgeon consult, another nut appt? , a scope or baruim swallow. ) I didn't actually talk to Andrea about it but I assumed it would add months more of a wait . You might want to talk to her about it?
I originally picked RNY over VSG ( I was torn and Dr Vergis said if I was on the fence RNY was the gold standard) I thought I would need the boost from the malabsorbtion. I really don't think so anymore. I am not a huge sweets person so I didn't need the dumping to avoid them.
I liked the sleeve the more I researched it. No re-routing of the intestines, stomach is more normal with a pyloric valve, I liked the idea of the stomach being removed and along with it the ghrelin and hunger. I didn;t like the idea of my old stomach just sitting there. Or the malabsobtion of the vitamins issue.
I had never had heartburn before the surgery and am using an anti acid med now. I haven't experienced heartburn but more of an acid-y feeling in my stomach. It's tolerable
I think most dr's still reccommend not using nsaids with both surgery but especially with RNY. You just need to avoid or limit them with the VSG.
You were pretty sure about RNY at one point , is it just jitters? I do think both are good surgeries.

i went with rny, i wanted something with alot of history, and proven long term results. i totally understand the great reasons for the vsg, and myself was torn between them aswell. ultimatly, when my surgeon told me how much i can expect to lose with each surg, i picked the one with the greatest weight loss, the rny. i still wonder if i made the right choice, maybe i could have done quite well with the vsg, who knows... i think i will always wonder. but the vsg is fairly new, so really i dont know. im happy with my choice, and feel i will get the best results with it. i think the bigger you are and if you have any diabetes then rny is my personal choice. i am borderline diabetic, so getting rid of that risk also appealed to me.
i think we all have some form of pre op gitters, lol,

When I thought I could go through the Manitoba program, I was all for the RNY..I wanted the dumping syndrome to force me not to eat sweets. |And I had read so much about losing alot of weight that I wanted that for sure. Then the more I read about VSG and saw how many people were successful with it, and how much less invasive it is, I decided that was the one for me. Now that I am paying to go to Mexico, VSG is 5500 and RNY is 10,000-12,000..so thats how my decision was made.
You are just having normal pre-surgery fears that everyone has and we always second guess ourselves. Im so scared that if I dont do well with this surgery, Ill be kicking myself for not doing the RNY (wont have any more money for a change of mind later in life) You just have to come to terms with what you decided. If you are really really undecided and can afford it, you can always get the VSG and then if you are not happy, turn it into the RNY. Im sure though that you would have to self-pay for it.
Good luck with your decision..we all know what you are going through!

I researched like mad and just let that guide me. I originally wanted the BAND. I liked the reversibility of it....seeing that I was already sabotaging myself and I hadn't even gotten surgery yet, I kept reading. I stumbled upon VSG and HOUNDED post-ops for info. I discovered that the VSG is actually a very old type of surgery used for stomach cancers, ulcers and other stomach troubles. Doctors discovered that removing part of the stomach led to weight loss, BUT better health. SOUNDS GOOD TO ME! So far VSG is just a teeny bit behind with weight loss than RNY. It's effective!
I was a light weight, with around 100lbs to lose. I was a perfectly healthy fatty..with PCOS...LOL I did get tested several times over the years for diabetes and thyroid issues...nothing. So I decided that VSG was "enough" of a solution. I CAN take NSAIDS, I rarely need them however. I didn't like the idea of my intestines being rerouted, or my stomach hanging out causing hunger either( that doesn't happen to everyone). I really just needed a boost to get most of my weight off. Maintenance was hard when I would lose 60lbs on my own(yrs before surgery)...see I still had 60 or more to go and lost momentum.
I think that if someone has a sweet tooth, Diabetes, Thyroid issues and has more than 100lbs to lose RNY is the best choice. All I had was a sweet tooth and quantity issues...and thankfully I can work with my VSG quite well. I think you are having pre-surgery jitters and that is fine and normal. It shows that you are serious and want to succeed!!
Best advice I can give you is this: Follow diet guidelines VERY closely for the first 6 mos. LIKE REALLY CLOSELY! Drink your water, sleep well, exercise and take your vits.
