Weight Gain between Referral and Consult

Just wondering if anyone has gained a small amount of weight from the time that their referral was sent until the time they go for their surgical consult?  If you gain 5-10 pounds will the surgeons make you loose that weight before they will go ahead with surgery?
Thanks!

I gain about 8 pounds between my referral and consult and it did not effect me being approved. Was just told that I had to maintain or lose prior to surgery. Not sure if the rules have changed as my consult was in July 2011.

I gained 10 lbs in the 9 month wait from referral to consult.   Dr. Vergis allowed me to move forward but told me lose it before my appointment with the NUT two months later.  I managed to lose it, so there were no problems.  Not sure what would have happened if I hadn't have lost it.   But having said that, I put the 10 lbs back on in the 4 month wait from meeting the NUT to the start of the pre-op Optifast diet.  Of course with the Optifast I managed to lose it (plus more) again prior to the actual surgery.

Be careful though.  I've heard of others who were held bac****il they could prove that they were able to lose some weight.   I'm not sure if this was to lose weight that was gained during the wait from referral to consult, or if these people hadn't made honest efforts in the past to lose weight through diet and exercise.

You know, the wait times for this program are now so ridiculous that you will have plenty of time to lose it before you have the actual surgery (can you tell Im angry at our system) lol. Im sure its not a good thing to gain a few pounds but Im pretty sure you wouldn#t be the only one. I wouldnt worry too much about it.

I had a gain of maybe 5 lbs and Dr. Vergis then made me wait longer. He gave me 6 weeks to lose 13 lbs and get established with an exercise program. I was devastated because I had gone in that day hoping for the end of June beginning of July surgery he first had suggested. Because of the gain and exercising 2 days a week was not enough I wouldn't have my surgery when I was hoping. I did lose those 12 lbs and was exercising about 4 days a week because I had taken time off work. I did have my surgery in September. I do not recommend a gain if it can be prevented.

Just my opinion, but I find that their request that we don't gain weight prior to surgery RIDICULOUS!!! If we were able to control our weight then we wouldn't need the surgery in the first place!

Does anyone threaten a diabetic by telling them that they better control their blood sugar or they won't get treatment? It is just another example of discrimination. It can be devastating when it comes from a health-care provider!
