surgery in Mexico
I had surgery in BC and my surgeon has good aftercare, I see him and the dietitian for post op appointments at 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and at the 1 year mark. Its not an inconvenience since the appointments are for my own good and reasonably spaced apart. Between my surgeon, dietitian my blood levels are being well tracked for any abnormal results and any complications can be dealt with quickly. If have any trouble I can be near my surgeon in 3 hrs or less.
To have surgery in Mexico is a personal choice. For myself I doubt that I'd be so confident in my choice without the excellent resources and detailed education that I recieved pre-operative and now post op. Yes its a pain in the ___ to wait for surgery but I used the time to my benefit and found that I am better prepared for what lies ahead.

so you have to travel to BC each time ? I was just curious about what happens out of town . I really hope Manitoba opens the criteria or I can shed some pounds . I hate flying and have kids that I need to take care of . I am going to get a refere even though I know I will be denied but maybe that will put me closer on the list . Do you know if you get denied if you have to get another referal ?
Yes I go to BC for each appointment. It's overnight usually with most appointment stuff done in morning if lucky then the afternoon to explore Vancouver. The next time we plan to go to the Aquarium or walk around the entire stanley park it depends on the weather. While there I see the surgeon and dietitian, sometimes I'll see the Internal med speciaist. I get weighed in, have my blood drawn then go over results, review food journal and discuss any food intolerances and then work on post op plan for food/vitamins for next step. Send as many referrals as it takes. By the way I hate flying passionately!!!
You would have all your follow-up with your family doctor here. It was never suggested that I return to Mexico for anything. That would be very impractical. If by some remote chance you have any complications, which would be very rare if you go to a reputable facility with a good surgeon, you would be referred (by your family doctor here) to a local surgeon for care.
If you happened to have complications while you are still in Mexico, you would have to pay for whatever care you would need, but I think that's a very rare occurrence. Again, I would be sure you are going to a reputable facility with a surgeon with lots of experience. (I went to Obesity Control Center, which has an International Bariatric Center of Excellence designation.)

Yes Dianne, I agree and one who is one of the top 15 Bariatric surgeons. AS long you you do your research, and dont just settle for the best price, it shouldnt be a problem. My gp has told me that although she has never had a patient who has had this type pf surgery, she has a lot of patients who have had some form of weight loss surgery and has no problem helping me along the way.
