THIS is why I will not be telling people about my surgery.

Girl at work:  So you should see a picture of one of my friend's on facebook...She was really fat and lost a tonne of weight.... she had one of those band things put on her stomach and now she looks soooo good. .
guy at work:  Tell her "oh.. good for you, but you cheated so it doesn't count!"
other girl at work:  "What did you say"
Guy at work:  oh Tracy's Lard ass friend had a surgery and lost a bunch of weight, but that's cheating....lazy *****"

sooooooooo....again.. .it's now ok to make fun of someone for being fat, losing weight, and having surgery to do so is cheating, therefore it doesn't count. . .

I really hate people sometimes. ....

That's terrible but unfortunately true to form for most people I know (even fat people) and I am with you, keeping it quiet for that reason.  People I have trusted with my secret (whom I thought would be more supportive, have suggested incredible tidbits of wisdom like "eating less" and "exercising more"  Really.    REALLY!!!!???) ....... geez I should have thought of that .....

and so what if it's cheating ------- BITE ME!  I'll cheat, lie and steal to get where I need to be (okay, that's the anger talking so maybe not) but I think I am going to have to pull up my big girl panties (literally) and try and ignore the mean, stupid people out there.

on a side note - aren't breast implants "cheating" - guys don't seem to mind those lol!!

Well this just confirms my exact thoughts.  Yesterday I recieved a message on OH from a CBC reporter.  She was interested in interviewing people as she is doing an story on the WLS pilot project here in the province.  Although I think the story is a fabulous idea, and I have been very forthcoming with family, friends and immediate co-workers, I had to tell her I wasn't interested.  My exact words to her were:

"Unfortunately obesity is one prejudice that is still accepted by society. I just don't want to be judged by people who believe that I, and the others like myself are taking the easy way out."

But on a sidenote....keep your eyes and ears open for the CBC report by Gosia Sawicka.

NGD, I was thinking the same thing....same as using ncorette etc to stop smoking and no one judges those people.

It would be nce if people could see how hurtful those comments are. WE have a girl at work that can't keep weight on and people are cruel to her as well(behind her back) making comments about her having eating disorders etc. ...

I hope the news story will touch on our government's reluctance to properly fund WLS. a reluctance I believe is based on prejudice and discrimination.
if there were a surgery to cure cancer with as high a success rate as wls has for obesity, would it be fully funded?

People can be such idiots!  They comment if your big and if your small.... We need to believe in ourselves and know that it is their problem and not ours.  Stand up tall people!  Stand up tall....

I have heard the,"you took the easy way" line before.  I tell anyone and everyone who will listen my story and I sure have alot to say about it.  I think surgery is a much harder choice then diet and exercise alone.  Sometimes people just need to be educated about all the side effects that my choices have given me.  Living with low food volumes, no suger, dumping syndrome and eating vitamins like candy is not an easy choice.  At the end of the day, I am proud I have lost my weight.  I am smaller now then I was in highschool.  I am known as the "tiny" one when people describe me! There will always be haters, haters of fat people, haters of skinny people,  just let it roll off your back and be proud of what you have accomplished!

IMHO, the surgery is personal; same as you might not be broadcasting the fact you had a tummy tuck, or breast implants, or even a cancer surgery.

This is not information you need to share with anyone.  My own mother doesn't even know I had surgery and if my kids hadn't mentioned it to my sister, she never would have known either.

I just tell people the truth..in a simplified way.  Yes  - I'm watching what I eat.  Yes, I am eating 5-6 small meals a day.  Yes, I am avoiding carbs........  These are all true facts; they just don't need to know that I do this because of the surgery.  It's not their business!!!!!
