I have been reading all afternoon about WLS . Now I finally understand the difference between RNY and VSG . Am I right in thinking that VSG has less side affects ? I really don't like the idea of having my intestines re routed etc.... The side effects that I am most fearful of are intestine blockages and not getting enough nutrient . My friend takes almost 5 weeks off a year because she gets so low in nutrients . My MIL had 3 major surgeries after her WLS due to blockages and hernias from the WLS . She also had extreme nutient deprevation . She was on an IV (pic line) for almost 2 years and barely left her house she was so sick .
I know the extreme risks of being this weight too . VSG looks less scary

I know people who have had both.   The one who had the RNY has developed osteoporosis.  The one that had the VSG was just recent and has so far had no side effects.

I understand that fear well. i had met former WLS patients from RNY, VBG, LapBand that had horrific tales post surgery. I was truely scared to move on doing my referral at first then i research the heck out of all surgeries available and decided VSG was the one for me. I seen it at the one surgery that leaves your inner parts in a trimmed but natural form.
I am a recent VSG post-op I had surgery Feb 6/12 and doing fantastic. I am also a diabetic with severe sleep apnea and pysch issues. less than a week post -op i was completely off some particular meds with awful side effects and dramatically reduced my daily insulin amounts to next to nothing. I also had to get my cpap machine flow rate adjusted downward... I have improved that much with vsg. I lost 47 lbs so far and working on more.

I got the RNY and I am very happy with it. I can be forgetful with taking my supplements everyday but my labs are always great. I was diabetic and left the hospital being able to forget about the 8 pills a day I was taking to keep it under control. Over a year later my diabetes is still in remission and I feel great. I chose the RNY for the higher rate of knocking the diabetes into remission. My only regrete is not getting it done sooner.
