So worried about liver not getting smaller before surgery
I desperately need some advice !!!!
I am terrified my liver will not get smaller on the Optifast diet and I will be opened up and then closed up without the surgery being done. I am on day 10 of the Optifast diet and I have only lost 4 lbs. Anyone who has had the surgery can you tell me where you were with lbs lost on day 10 of your Optifast diet and how much did you lose in total on the Optifast diet??? I don't understand why I am not losing weight on the diet. Was wondering if it is because I have already lost 30 lbs since my first consult in September. Do you think I might be at a plateau?? And, has anyone heard of someone going to the OR and being opened up to be closed up with no surgery completed because their liver was not small enough?? OMG I am so worried about this I can't even sleep at night.

I would stop worrying if I were you! You already lost 30 lb (yay for you!) and your liver would have been shrinking with that weight loss, too, not just while you're on the OptiFast.
I thought both types of surgery were done laparoscopically (through little holes with instruments), but maybe I'm wrong. Definitely with a VSG, you are not "opened up"...you have four (or that's what I have anyway, but my surgery wasn't done here) little incisions placed in your abdomen for instruments to be placed in. I don't think there is a specific size for a liver. I'm sure everyone's liver is a different size.
Don't worry and SLEEP!!! I'm sure you and your liver will be fine. Good luck!

Vertical sleeve gastrectomy at Obesity Control Center (Dr. Ariel Ortiz), Tijuana, MX. Self-pay, self-referral, 4-week wait. Abdominoplasty Aug 10, 2013 (Dr. K. Dolynchuk, Winnipeg - self-pay)
As long as you followed the prescribed plan you will be fine! I agree with those above, if you have already lost 30 lbs., then your liver has already become less fatty. Just stay on the plan & you will be good to go!

P.S. Pre-op anxiety is totally normal. I went through it too. You get through it & come out the other side smiling!

If you're sticking to the Optifast, don't worry, you will be fine. I had the same worry as you and Dr. Andrew must have thought I was crazy because the first question I asked him when I saw him after surgery was "How was my liver?". Surprisingly he said "Small". I lost about 13 pounds on the Optifast.
