If you had to fly home
For those of you who flew somewhere else for your surgery, how were you feeling for the flight home? Did you stay a couple extra days after your surgery before you flew home? I need to gather as much info as I can in order to make some really big decisions about whether or not travelling for this surgery will be an option for me (hotel rooms, flights etc on top of actual surgery cost) so any info you want to share would be very much appreciated!
there are airlines that have strict policies regarding flying after abdominal surgery - cannot fly for 72 hrs post surgery and produce medical note clearing you to fly even after 72 hrs. I needed to get one so I would check with the airline you intend to fly with. Its for your safety so I had no problem doing it. I felt ok flying home minus the flight delays lol.
I had my surgery in Tijuana, Mexico and had to fly from San Diego to Winnipeg with a connection in Calgary. I had surgery Monday and flew home Friday, which was considered one extra day, so I paid for one extra night in a hotel in San Diego. At the facility I went to, the hotel was included in the fee they charged. (Not sure if that's what you're considering or just referral to another province.)
I had absolutely no problems with flying (except flight delays, the same as sexy_me!!). However, I'm not sure if I was "normal". I had absolutely no problems and not one tiny twinge of pain at any time following my surgery, which completely amazed me. I walked what seemed like miles in the airport to Customs with no issues.
I had no idea that any airlines wouldn't allow you to fly within 72 hours of having abdominal surgery or that any required any kind of medical clearance letter. I didn't even think to check and there was no one with the airline (WestJet) who even knew I had surgery. In any case, Thursday afternoon would have been the earliest I was allowed to leave after having surgery on Monday as that's the day they schedule drain removal, so that would cover the 72 hours. I imagine most centres in Canada or the U.S. or anywhere else would not consider you safe to be out of their care for at least that length of time after surgery and if they did, I would suggest not going there.
