how many have experienced side effects
I know two people who have had Gastric bypass both not very happy with the out come . My mother inlaw had it in 1996 ish in vancouver . She has since passed away (not from the surgery) but has always said she would never ever do it again . She couldn't leave her house for a year and nearly died from lack of vitamins . It took 6 years before she could stop having IV's and even 10 years after surgery she still had to be hospitalized once in awhile for low counts .
Another friend had the surgery 5 years ago . She still has a horrible time keeping iron up . On average every year she is off for 6 weeks due to illness .
My question is if anybody has ezperienced this or if I am just the "lucky " one to know 2 people with horrible side effects . I am really looking into the surgery but I am so scared because these two situations are always in the back of my mind .

I know I'm still not very far out, 4 1/2 months but at this point I would do it again in a heartbeat. My first choice was the vsg. I was absolutely terrified to have the RNY because my mother had it in the 80's and didn't lose enough and did not maintain the loss. Her best friend had it years later and died while still in the hospital. Due to other health issues I was not able to have the vsg so after talking with the surgeon I decided this was too big an opportunity to not go ahead. I have not really had any complications and I healed quite quickly. So far my blood tests have all been good but if I don't become more diligent about taking my daily vitamins I'll soon have problems but it will be my own fault. I'm hoping that in 5 or 10 years I still feel the same but right now I would say that the surgery has given me back my quality of life. Good luck on your decision!

If you don't have it already, a great book to pick up and read is Weight loss surgery for dummies. It can help to explain the surgeries and a lot more. Chapters indio carries it

I understand your fear completely. I know people having a terrible time with their surgery afterwards. It scares the heck out of me but It is not stopping me from mine in 12 days. The same bad effects may or may not happen but if I am extremely careful following instructions I should be ok. I researched, spoke to my surgeon, GP all in great detail and feel comfortable with my decision.
The popular surgery options of many years ago have faded into nothing(thankfully) and new improved techniques have replaced them. So with many options available than years prior, just do your research and speak with your medical team to make an informed decision.

hi i lso had rny april 26 11 and have no problem except had some infection in one site but cleared up and doing great i would ot change my option because i would never be able to do without it good luck in your decisons me i love my rny life is great ,sex is great ,and i finally love myself with alot less of me
Oh my goodness, what awful complications. I don't know anyone on this site who has experienced anything like that. I have my RNY over a year ago and I can say without hesitation that it was the best decision I ever made. The procedure is now done laparoscopically, so the risk of complications is much less than it used to be. I was very lucky and was out of the hospital in two days. There are people here who have had more severe complications but I have yet to hear anyone regret their decision.
Before surgery, I took time to really research my options. I sometimes wonder if having the VGS would have decreased my appetite more. However, I do not regret what I did for a moment. I am not saying that it has always been easy. Just last weekend, i had a terrible bout of dumping syndrome just because I had too much salad dressing. The outcome of that was that it got me back on track with my eating regimen. I have to take vitamin supplements, but they are doing the trick. I have had blood work done twice in the past 6 months and the results were all normal. In fact, my physicain was thrilled because I no longer have a fatty liver.
Keep researching. No one can make this decision for you. This site is a great place to connect with others who are going through the same thing.
Good luck!

Hello,
I had the RNY surgery March 2008. I have lost over 100 lbs... and it is almost 4 yrs now. I had to go out of province (Alberta) as there was no surgeons here in MB. I was scared as I did not know one person who had this type of surgery and hardly anyone was on this forum in 2008. As others have suggested, research the various types of surgeries, email people on this forum (and other provinces) and ask them questions - pro/cons/ etc. I have no regrets about the surgery just that I didn't do it sooner! I was almost 50 and had been close to 270-280 lbs for 10-15 yrs. So much more healthier now. Hope that helps.
