I am from winnipeg and am really just starting to research surgery , What is the trial program at St boniface ? Do I need to get a referal from my family doctor for the trial ? I am 5'2 and 285 pounds . I excercise and try very hard to lose weight but just can't seem to get the weight off . Can you give me some useful links and any info / advice you may have ?
welcome to our little family.everyone here is very open and helpful.dont be afaid to ask questions.
first the trial program is to see what kind of demand there is(i think)
second yes you need a referal from your family dr.
third the wait time is getting longer as more people are finding out about the program.i think the wait time is 12-18 months right now.
i hope this helps

if I added correctly, your BMI is over current requirements for St B program. these are some other links that might help also..

Well I hope that this the BMI requirements change . I really can't tavel for surgery . Maybe one trip but I think you have to make 4 or 5 trips from what I've read . I have 3 young kids and a very low income . It just won't work . How long are they takings patients for ? Too bad it's only women . I hope the program expands .
Hi! Welcome!
I actually spoke to the St. B Bariactric clinic today. The wait list is about 20 months long. The pilot project is now no longer a pilot project and they are currently waiting for proper funding from the government to expand this to include less wait times, men, and of course, more staff/nurses etc.
Once you get your referal letter from your doctor in, it takes a couple months for them to get back to you to let you know if you are within their criteria. From there, it's a waiting game to see them, for physic evaluation (to make sure you're commited to following through after the surgery, etc) and dietician and apparently there's a class (conference type thingy) that you need to attend to as well. Once those are all completed, then you wait to meet the surgeon, decide on the type of surgery you're getting, and then that's the shortest wait time... 1-2 months at most - to have it done.
Out of province is covered, however I did alot of calling around today and found their programs are pretty much the same as well as the wait times. Shortest I found is 18 months for Regina. But how much further are you ahead when you have to do all that traveling? There are initial appointments to go to there, as well as follow ups. Manitoba Health will cover the surgery. You are to pay all your travel (car or plane) but get reimbursed after by them. Accomodations and food (or your travel companion's expenses) are not covered. You also have to apply for special coverage for each time you need to go for a follow up. That application has to be accompanied by a letter from your doctor each time.
Alot of hoops to jump through. But it'll be worth it in the end!

Hello,
Glad others have answered your questions. So glad that MB has a program here, unfortunately the waiting time is getting long. I had surgery in 2008 out of province (Alberta) as there was no program here in MB, had to wait about 4 yrs for an appt. Although the waiting is hard, the time will fly by. I have had no regrets waiting, or having surgery.
