1 year POST OP Mantioba VSG update....
Hi everyone,
It's been too long since I've been on this board...I had my VSG done by Dr. Andrew here in Winnipeg (Oct. 19, 2010) at the Vic. This forum was a HUGE source of support and information for me pre and post op
so ONE YEAR LATER, here is where I;m at....
I am down 104 lbs, my blood pressure and cholesterol levels are normal, and my medications have all but disappeared. I am 5 lbs. away from surgeon's goal weight and 12 lbs. from my personal goa. I still cant believe the words 'maintenance' and goal weight' are part of my vocabulary.
The best benefit is improved health, the added benefit is clothes...and wearing a size 10 jeans, eyeing a size 8! I could never have imagined and still struggle to get used to myself as a 'regular' size person.
My life now.... I feel like I left the life of the 'dead inside and just existing' club and joined the real world where people interact and participate in life. I smile more, I want to go out and do things, and I enjoy interacting. I am no longer hiding behind food. I never think about food, except for the joy of gourmet coooking (which I rarely eat). I never obsess about how much and what I eat. I control portions easily due to the procedure and training myself immediately after post op.
I don't eat junk food as a rule, and try to always follow the simple rule of protein first, no carbs, This has worked for me and quinoa and greek yogurt are my new bff's. I have never bought a chocolate bar or a bag of chips post op. I slip up,but always respect 'my pouch' and always pay attention to restriction and never getting too full. It really works, i eat the same amount almost 13 months out than I did at 5 months out. My appetite and ablity to eat has so far..not increased.
This surgery is a TOOL, it's up to us how to use it. It is also a gift WORTH WAITING FOR! For those of you waiting ( I hear wait times have exploded since I had surgery) my compassion is with you and just know it is SO WORTH THE WAIT! This surgery gave me back my life.
