My name is Jim and here is my story. I have considered WLS for ten years and researched it fully. Ten years ago I wanted to LOOK better. Now I want to BE healthier. (diabetes, high blood pressure, triglycerides, gout, sore back, ankles, feet, etc etc) At 55 - tick tock tick tock - time to act. After talking to a former WLS patient, Tracy Wurch, I decided to get the surgery. My choice was Jerusalem Hospital in Tijuana Mexico. My contact was Louise Johnson. The cost was $4500.00 USD plus airfare through (Medicard). Start weight 380. Pre op weight 342. Surgery date Aug 19 2011. Todays weight 258. (1981 weight!). Size 50 jeans to size 38!!!!
My comments two months after surgery.
First - I should have done it 10 years ago.
Second - anyone out there that has ANYTHING bad to say about Jerusalem Hospital, Dr. Almanaz or the staff is way off track. I have NEVER been treated with such care and professionalism, anywhere in Canada. It is hard to believe that anyone would post negative statements about them.
Third - Is it rough. You bet it is. That's life! However IF YOU FOLLOW the pre op diet to the letter and the post op diet YOU will LOOSE WEIGHT. If you change your eating habits (for life) and put protein first you will continue to loose weight. You must forever give up pop, chips, cake, ice cream etc, etc and eat healthy.
Fourth - In my life I have wasted much more than 4500.00 but NEVER for such a life changing event.
Fifth- Don't wait for the Manitoba government to help you. Except for the trial WLS that is happening, the government doesn't care if your fat and unhealthy. The New Age Health is take care of yourself.
And Finally If you are serious about getting healthy and loosing weight, then please contact Louise at the following and let her know you read my story.
Positive comments appreciated, negative ones will be ignored!

Congratulations on your surgery and weight loss! I think it such a shame that our government doesn't recognize the need to treat obesity. It is a disease like all others and causes such poor quality of life. I was able to have my surgery here in Sept but I began searching many years ago. I could never afford to go and pay for it myself so I am really happy that this program was brought to Manitoba. I also hope that they open it up for those that have higher BMI's and for men.
Anyone who needs this surgery should know that there are options available for them. I never had any idea about people going to Mexico for the surgery until I became a member of this site. I have also heard such wonderful things about the care you receive out there. I think more PCP's here should be telling there patients about the option.
