Second thoughts
Well, my surgery is Sept 12th. I have lost about 35 pounds already. Since I have lost this weight, my family is trying to convince me not to get the surgery. They are really afraid that I am going to be sick with diarreah the rest of my life. They think I can do it on my own. My sis in law has friends who are nurses and that is what they have said. My Hubby's coworker is begging me not to get it done. Her friend had gotten the surgery and 60% of her hair fell out and was told that her hair would not grow back.
Is there any regrets or is everybody truly happy?

I agree with Sondra. It is your decision. I had my VSG done 6 mths ago and lost 90+ lbs. I feel so good. I have so much energy. The surgery is a long term tool for successful weight loss. I would definately do it again in a flash, and wish I would of done it 10 years ago. I have my life back, after 15 yrs of misery. I spend lots of time with my son playing and having the energy to keep up. I wish I could bottle my enthusiasm for the procedure. We have a great support network within this group. I wish you peace with making the right decision FOR YOU!
Hi there, only you know what is besy for you. I spent 20 years of my life losing and regaining weight. After I had surgery I also lost 60 percent of my hair. I am a hairdresser, and it bothers me. I would still have the sugery all over again with no regrets. You have to decide for yourself. good luck
Hi!
I haven't had my surgery yet, so I can understand your trepidation and misgivings. I lost 60 pounds with weigh****chers...then put it all back on. Then lost another 60 with diet and exercise...back on it went (and more!). My doctor told me that 95% of diets fail...that is, only 5 % actually succeed in keeping the weight off. WLS is not always 100% successful, but the success rate is leaps higher than anything else.
Congratulations on losing the 35 pounds. That is fantastic! I guess it just depends on what your issue with food is...are you a grazer? Or is it portion control? Are you a stress eater or binge eater?
The people who have this surgery have a lot more than 35 pounds to lose...are you able to maintain this new lifestyle and not worry about "rebounding"? That's something I could never do...food always wins.
I need a 'permanent' cure. I know that it is a major surgery, but I can't wait to lose the weight permanently and be a healthier person!!
I agree with everything the other ladies have said...but after reading all the posts on the site (as far back as possible), I really haven't read anything that insinuates "regret" after the fact. Nobody has mentioned that they wish they hadn't done this.
This is something that you need to do for only YOU! Your worries are extremely valid...hair loss is sometimes a factor but from the research I've done, it does grow back. Have you mentioned these concerns to your doctor?
Good luck with everything!

Congrats on the 35lb loss! I am having my surgery Sept 6th and haved been faced with the same question. A friend asked me if I would change my mind if I lost a lot on the MediTrim. I told her I wouldn't because I don't think I would ever be able to maintain the loss on my own, long term. I have been on a rollercoaster ride with my weight since having my kids 20 years ago. I gain and lose and then gain back double of what I have lost. It was not being able to keep the weight off that I would lose that brought me to the internet searching for the help I needed. As the date gets closer of course I am super excited but also getting nervous and maybe a bit scared but for myself I know I would never lose and maintain the loss without the surgery. The decision has to be yours alone as I find that the choice to have WLS is a very personal. Good Luck!

I know what you are feeling.
I'm only on day 4 of life after surgery and the reality of it i****ting me finally.
BUT i already don't regret it.
I'm quite uncomfortable and wishing the pain away, but i know that this is the rest of my life that i am fighting for.
I totally had all of those opinions thrown my way as well. So many ideas of what could happen and what might have happened to others - ALL are legit and need to be considered. If you don't consider all of the possible outcomes, you are only hurting yourself.
however, for ME...it was the fact that I turned 30 this year, and my Grandma had her first stroke at 32 years old. With the history in my family and the weight that I am at, I knew I wouldn't be around to see my grandkids. and if i WAS around, it wouldn't be playing with them outside or going for a bike ride. my daughter is 6 and i already have spent so much of her life on the couch exhausted.
it really is your own choice, and you need to weigh ALL of the options.
i spent a LOT of time on youtube watching video diaries of people who were considering it, who had it, just learning all i can. the worst thing you can do is go into this surgery without really investigating it.
i really have to disagree with the thought that if you lose weight on the Meditrim then you can do it on your own. that two weeks was the toughest thing i've ever done. you are literally on liquids. if that is what kind of a diet we would need to be on to lose weight, we would be anorexic. i'm not saying that to be rude or insensitive but it is the truth. those two weeks are hell, and have NO bearing on whether or not we are able to lose weight without the surgery. you would die on that type of diet long-term - i'm sure Dr's would agree.
whatever decision you make, i support you!! look into it more, talk to more people who have had it, and if you're truly not ready, then take the time you need! it's not a race, though the unfortunate timeline of things makes it seem that way - it's a journey. a long hard one. this is NOT an easy fix.
you can do it. whether it's with surgery or not. make it YOUR decision and you will be successful.

I lost 25lbs on the meditrim preop diet and some people said you can do this on your own!!
Nope I ate all the time and was hungry all the time prior to my VSG surgery in Oct 2010.
Sure hair loss was a issue and I did take pictures of the hair that fell out for you guys to see, BUT it was sooooo worth the hair loss for the weightloss. At 10 months out I would do it again in heartbeat and wish I would have done/or could have afforded to have done it sooner.
Yes, my hair is growing back at 10 months out, my thinking was sure I was fat and had nice thick red hair, but I was unhappy and FAT. Now I am slimmer by over 100lbs!! AND BLONDE!! for this week.
My feet are so much better now.
My BP is in the normal range(was high end of normal)
My boobs are so much smaller and longer now, but hey they can be fixed later.(smaller is cheaper for bras)
My confidence is incredible now.
I am ABLE to ride a bike without hurting my ASS!.
List goes on and on, the choice is yours and yours only. Listen to that little voice(you know the one who tells you to eat)she knows what is best for you!!
What ever choice you make, go with it, and never look back and say what if!

Stats: HW 311 lbs in Aug 2010, VSG on 10/19/2010, Surgeons goal 208lbs, My Goal 175lbs or less Current 193lbs
I agree with all the statements above. The bottom line is that you are the only one who can make this decision. When I decided to have the surgery done, I deliberately avoided telling people outside of my immediate circle. There is a lot of fear, prejudice and misinformation out there. I researched my butt off until I found the option that was best for me.
Has it been a perfect ride? No. Do I regret my decision for one minute? No Way!
The pre-op diet was horrible. The only way I was able to stay on it was because I believed that it was necessary and I knew that it was temporary. It took me me 2.5 months to fully recover from my RNY surgery. The nausea was not fun. However, it was also a time of unbelievable weight loss. Now, I am 8 months out and I'm down 101lbs! I have had plateaus which have stressed me out. I have had to struggle with snacking issues, because I still love carbs. However, I know that my success would have been impossible without the surgery.
Yes, I have had some hair loss. However, this happens when you are on any weight loss plan for a significant length of time. Luckily for me, the hair loss is minor, so there isn't really a difference in my appearance. However, others in our group have had major hair loss and yet they still don't regret their decisions.
The statistic stated is right. For people who are obese, diets fail 95% of the time. Would you prescribe anyone a course of action that is doomed to fail that often? I feel that with the surgical options available, we are at least given a chance of leading a normal life.
Good Luck with your decision. Let your heart and informed mind (not fear) determine your course of action.

I had the sleeve done on June 2, and have absolutely NO regrets. I have never been happier. I would reccomend this surgery to anyone. No hair loss yet, But if i did have any hair loss in the future, i would still have no regrets. I was out of hospital the morning after surgery, and each day got better, and easier. Sooooooooooo, i can honestly say that i am absolutely, TRULY happy.
