Any out of towners?

I just found out I am expected to stay in Wpg for a week after the surgery.  Did anyone actually do this?  I know there is a good reason for staying but all I want to do when I'm sick, is sleep in my own bed.  Any recommedations for a half decent hotel close to the hospital would be appreciated.

There are lots of out of towners who have stayed in Winnipeg. I'm sure they will chime in. Think of it this way, by the time you get home, you will be used to quite a few things which will make transition much easier.

The doc's don't do this to make us miserable, they do it for our safety. At least you are not paying 10k and then STILL staying far away from home.  Think of it as a way cheaper way to kick start your new healthy life! It's worth it!

Being rural, I understand your angst with extra costs, but do you live far enough out of the city to qualify for the Northern Patient Transportation Program?  Being so far north, there are limited services here, so there is a small portion they will help with (gas, small meal allowance and part of hotel) but ONLY if it is a referred service - which this is, but I need to find out it would be considered "cosmetic" - I don't think they would help me out there.  Also you pay for everything in advance and then get refunded after.    I hope I qualify........

STILL worth it!  and still way cheaper than self pay......

I agree with Kokonut. I know it is an inconvenience, but in the end, it is worth it.
Of course, you want to be at home, but if something did go wrong and you needed medical attention, it is much safer for you to be in the city. Think of it as an investment in your health.

Besides, in the hotel you won't be tempted to do housework or yardwork. LOL!
You will have nothing to do but rest!

Good Luck!

I was just a little surprised at the length of time they require you to stay in Winnipeg.  I recently had a major operation at HSC and travelled home the day of my release from the hospital.  Different situation….different rules I guess.

Thank you for the suggestion about Northern Patient Transportation Program but I am in Brandon, just two hours away.  Hopefully you will qualify though!

I was looking at staying at the Holiday Inn on Pembina.  My husband isn’t too fussy (he will be staying at a hotel while I’m in the hospital) but I wouldn’t mind hearing from someone who has stayed there or has other suggestions.  I don’t mind paying as long as it’s clean…lol

11 more days of the pre-op diet and I will be on my way to a new life!

Tina, you are already well on your way!  your journey started with the inital idea and look how far you have come!  It's kinda like having a baby - starts out as a good idea, some "prep" and waiting, THE DAY, some rough patches but in the end a very good thing and totally worth it.  but thank god your sleeve won't turn into a teenager!  lol...  I can't wait, I'm still in the embryo stage.....

"i stayed in hospital and was well taken care of and had lots of drugs"

This is a VERY good thing!  I was soooo happy when I felt those meds kick the pain to the curb! Not everyone has pain, mine wasn't bad. I sure liked it gone though..LOL

I stayed in hospital and was discharged after two nights.  I was fortunate, I was able to stay at a friends house for the week.  It was a Godsend.  Do you not have friends who live in the city? Even though it is costly, it is well worth it in the long run.  If I lived in the city, you could stay with me.  Best of luck!
