I don't live in Winnipeg, I am 3 hours away.  I want to make sure I have what I need for Post & Pre OP.

Last week when i was in the city, I got the protein drink - equate form Walmart - I like it.  I found at Costco -   Premier Nutrition - DON"T like them.

I emailed today for my post-op diet.

What else should I get?  The protein shakes, what is the most important -the high count in protein - should I worry about the calories & carbs?

Anymore good tasting protien drinks....,I gotta find one I like...otherwise..it is going be hell!

I really appreciate all your help!

I belong to the Red Deer Weight loss support group, and it's funny, but they have been having discussions on the best protein drinks too.  The one they are saying is best is called unjury.

I don't know if they sell them here in Winnipeg, but I plan on keeping my eyes open for them.  I think someone on the other site mentioned they were available at Costco in Red Deer.

I just found Glycerna Diabetic shakes which our NUT recommends.  And they were on sale too!  That was at the Regent Walmart. Give them a go.

For pre-op, Glucerna needs to have protein added to it. The dietitian will explain that to you and tell you how much. I used Boost Diabetic (Glucerna had soy in it, I'm allergic) for my pre-op and drank 4 a day plus 2 cups of allowed veggies. They tasted pretty good, although I didn't enjoy them after my surgery at all.

I found that I didn't like the Costco ones very much right before surgery or right after. Now though, I love them! Give them a try again later on and see how you feel about them. They have vanilla flavor coming soon, if they aren't already here yet. I know a few ladies have really liked the Syntrax nectar shakes. You can go to Popeyes Supplements next time you are in the city and they will let you taste pretty much any of their products :) Another thing you can try is just get an unflavored powder and mix it with whatever sugar free juice you like. I used Crystal light.

As for carbs, I just try to keep them low, I don't think I've gone over 50grams too often. I don't stress about calories or fat either. I know I lose weight just fine with fat in my diet.

I'm super excited for you, this is THE BEST thing I have done for myself yet!

From your profile it appears that you are having the lap band, so I'm not sure what the requirements for that are - I just know the RnY requirements - with the malabsorbtion issues etc.etc. so you might not need such stringent guidelines, however here is what I've learned and tried.

You want to get the best protein you can per serving. The Glucerna, Boost etc are not bad for meal replacements, but they only have about 10 -20 g of protein per serving.
If you can go to Costco they have the Premier shakes which everyone talks about. They are not bad - I'm not overly fond of chocolate and that is what my hubby bought me, but they are totally palatable and easy to use - put in the fridge and drink. Now my boys drink them.

I like the Kaizen Protein Powder 100% whey isolate at Costco - $37.00/2 kg bottle. They have 35 grams of protein/serving in them with 150 calories and about 1 g. carbs. They have 2 flavours - chocolate and vanilla ice cream. I've been using the vanilla ice cream. Mixes great with milk and ice cube. Costco also has a product called Lean n Fit unflavoured protein whey isolate. Same price as the Kaizen and also 35 grams of protein per serving. I LOVE this stuff. No flavour and mixes great with water. A little cool water to mix it up and I add it to my diet hot chocolate, soups and fruit smoothy.

With these protein powders I only need to take them twice a day at most to get my protein in. Because I add milk and am now eating other proteins I get plenty of protein in. They are a lot cheaper than than the pre-made shakes too.
I'm now trying a strawberry/banana protein whey isolate from GNC. I just bought it so I haven't tried it yet, but they are an option. My son loves his raspberry flavoured stuff that he bought from GNC to use after his workouts at the Y. These are almost twice the money from the ones at Costco though. They are only 1 kg bottles instead of 2 kg for the same money.

In these proteins you don't have to worry too much about the carbs and calories. They are made from WHEY which is a dairy by-product so there will be carbs and calories from all GOOD protein powders. These, because of the high protein content have a good ratio. Watch for those with small protein content and high carbs/calories they are not the best choice.
