harrowing thought
I too, spoke with Julie last wk, who told me the wait list is now 8-10 months rather than 6. I am hearing from many sources that this is due to funding. If this is the case, i wonder if there is a possibility of funding running out. That would be absolutely devastating for those of us on the waiting list. any input or thoughts???????
I don't think that will happen. I think Manitoba health can see the need for these surgeries and they will get lots of backlash if they shut it down.
Please keep in mind that because this is a new program, it is constantly shifting and changing as they see what needs to be done. Julie is doing the job of I'd say, 3 people. After her there is all the support staff at the clinic, the hospital and let's not forget Laura the dietitian. All this has to coordinate with the amount of people who are on the list and their needs. I am sure new needs and requirements are popping up all over the place too. It's a huge undertaking.
I'm sure the funding will improve once this year of pilot surgeries are done. Try not to worry too much I know it may seem weird since I have already had surgery, but I waited for 4 yrs. I know it's worth it, I know I am worth it.. and SO ARE YOU!
I think that if, by horrible chance, this gets shut down, that MH will be forced to pay for out of province surgeries... the sheer cost of that makes me think it "ain't gonna happen pilgrim!"
keep squeakin'..stay greasy!

Out of province was the only thing available when I had my RNY back in 2009. Originally my consultation date was to happen this year in April!! No telling when the surgery itself would have happened.
I got really lucky and phoned at the right times and got in through cancellations.
MB might be slow at the moment, but I'm sure there is a 'learning' curve to all of this. I'm sure funding won't be stopped (knock on wood).
I just wish they would realize that men in this province are needing the surgeries too! I find this very hard to understand. I have a very close friend who would benefit greatly from this, and yet he's denied because he's a man!! Disgusting.

Thank you, I phoned and left a message, we'll see what happens..
It seems everytime the goverment funds a new procedure there is always talk about them cancelling it. We went through the same thing with our son. He has a VNS implant and was one of the first kidsd in Manitoba to receive the surgery here in Manitoba. Shortlly after, the surgeon asked us if we would be willing to speak about the benefits to our son and his quiality of life. It never happened and the government continues to fund this procedure 8 years later.
I think any procedure that in the long term can increase a person's health and quality of life and lessen the strain on our health system is worth funding.
