I was referred to St. B back in November and I was hoping someone who has already been can answer this for me: who chooses the type of surgery you end up with?
When I originally spoke to my GP I had indicated lap band as my preferre choice but now that I've researched all the options that's no longer the case. When you meet with the surgeon do they discuss which type of surgery is best for you or are you already earmarked for a specific type?
Thanks in advance for the help. I've been lurking on these boards for a while, it seemed about time I actually posted something :)

Hi - I'm assuming that you are talking about the St. Boniface Surgical Associates - they are in St. Boniface Clinic - across the street from St. B.
The surgeon that you are scheduled to see will likely discuss the various surgeries with you and with your input and medical history the 2 of you will weigh out the different options and choose which surgery is best for you. This is what happened with me.

I figured that you might not have known that the clinic is separate from the hospital. It's actually a common mistake especially as they are both on Tache.
The surgeons work as a team. The surgeon that you see at your first appointment might not be the surgeon who actually does the surgery. When I had my surgery, Dr. Hardy led but Dr's Andrew and Vergis were both assisting. I don't believe Dr. Andrew leads with RNY but what the others do and don't do, I'm not sure.

For me, I met with Dr. Vergis first. Then he also did my VSG and Dr. Hardy assisted. When I met with him the first time we discussed what my goals were, what I knew about the surgeries offered(rny, vsg and lap band) and then he actually asked me, "which surgery do you want?" I said..VSG..thank you!..LOL
Dr. Vergis and Dr. Hardy are fresh out of school from having learned these procedures. The other 2 dr's(Bracken and Andrew) are, from what I have gathered awesome bariatric/abdominal surgeons. They all work together.
Man I am SO FREAKIN' thankful they started offering these surgeries here, covered by Manitoba health. I was like you and thought BAND for years..I was just trying to figure out how I was going to scrounge up the cash to pay for it. Then lo and behold..awesomeness! New doctors with SKILLZ!
So to answer your question..YOU decide which surgery you want/need with the help of your surgeon. Do your research and read lots!
Good Luck!!
