Hello to all,
I was wondering what is the deciding factor on weather or not you have a sleeve or RNY? I am just curious? Is it up to you or is it up to your Doctor?

Thanks Nikki

Actually we both decided the VSG was a better option.  I had decided 2 years ago that I wanted WLS and I did my research.  The RNY seemed more invasive and riskier than VSG.  My cousin had the RNY and although she had no complications within the first 2yrs, I think maybe she may be having some mal-absorption issues now.  Dr. Andrew was very interested in my thoughts and feelings of what was best for me.  How about you?
I wish I was able to meet with you all today.  Maybe next time.

I am having the RNY because it has a better chance of curing my hypertension and sleep apnea.
I agree that the VGS is less invasive. If I had less to lose, I would have gone for it. However, I think that the RNY gives me a better chance at success.

I am going to get the RNY. I have a lot to lose and this one seems to be the better choice to achieve that. I also have diabetes and this one suppose to have a high rate of "curing" it. 3rd reason is I know more people that have had the RNY than the sleeve and feel that I am more aware of the side effects etc of this procedure.

I decided to have the sleeve vs the RnY for the following reasons:

I am iron deficient due to heavy period, less chance with the sleeve
I scar really bad and did not want the long scar from the RnY
I was told about the intestines being re-routed and the dumping thing that can happen with the RnY and with my job I am not always able to use a clean bathroom!
I understood that the weightloss was very close, only about 10% of the difference was not a big deal for me.

I have alot of weight to loose too, my weight at the first appt was 305lbs.
My goal weight is 205 set by the nutrictionist
My ideal weight is 175lbs again set my the nut
But I would love to be the 147lbs I was in High School!!  (Big Dreamer)

A large part of me wanted to choose VSG because it is less invasive. However, I have suffered with GERD all of my adult lifetime - ulcer at 21. So that was a huge factor in my decision. Finally get rid of the heartburn. Rolaids and Pepcid were not really working anymore and I knew that my next option was prescription medication (very expensive and not covered by MB pharmacare). The final factor for me was that the RNY is reversible in an emergency - so if I develop a tumour in my pouch, they can hook me back up the rest of my stomach, whereas the sleeve is not reversible.

BTW - sorry to have missed you at Tims. First my hubby forgot that I was going and he went for coffee with friends with my car and my son took the hubby's car to work. Lol, by the time the hubby returned home it was too late for me to get there in a comfortable time (I live in EK). Hopefully next time though.
