Eating Habits
Hi all,
Thanks for this great feedback. It is definitely the journey and not the destination! I have had a couple of inklings for chocolate and as i mentioned I did like Shroomy...I had a couple bites and I was done. It is learning to get our minds into that mode that we no longer will eat to excess (in my case it was eat until i was practically comatose!) and let go of the guilt about what we eat. I dont want to replace one obsession for another!
Yes the NUT was adamant about 1200 calories (it is just unhealthy otherwise) but because i'm short, she reduced it to 1000 for now. She had the same reaction to my 500 cals a day. I have hit 1000 once and I know I will work up to it.
This is such a learning process and these kind of discussions are SOOOO helpful, I can't thank you all enough for your input.
Michelle, you make me laugh about the pretzels and ranch dip, that is so me! You are my inspiration!!!!!!

I read your comments and all I can think is "Will I be able to do that?" I am scared and excited all at the same time. I hear bread, rice and pasta are challenges post op. What are the name of the vits that you take pre-op to prevent hair loss? And what is the protein powder that you all buy at Costco called? I am starting to cut down on portion sizes, and trying out protein/fibre smoothies in the am to help with my pre op weight loss. I hope I can loose 20 lbs before surgery. How much weight did you all lose with the Meditrim pre-op?
I love reading your posts. I'm at 2 1/2 weeks post-op and am very tired of liquids and puddings. I can't wait until I can have non pureed veggies and meat. I sometimes feel that I'll never get there.
I gave up on the Costco Premier shakes - way too chocolatey for me. I'm now using the protein whey powder that I bought at costco (big huge jug!!) It's great. It's ice cream flavour, 35 g protein/serving. I mix it with pudding. I've now mixed it with my cream of wheat. I make banana smoothies (using milk - which thankfully this surgery didn't cause me to become intolerant of).
I've been refusing to puree meat and veggies but today I pureed a chicken finger using chicken soup base and a teaspoon of honey-dill sauce - yum! I got about 1/2 of it down and then was full.
There's been a number of posts regarding what may seem as a high caloric intake required by the NUT. From what I've learned through many years of recording patient's food and liquid intake, studying diets and from info from the personal trainer at the gym gave me, I feel that I can say that the reason why there is a minimum caloric intake requirement is because our bodies need about 1000 calories just to function properly. Going down below 600-800 calories can actually slow down your metabolism so you stop losing weight. This is the body's way of protecting itself against starvation and so that the vital organs will keep working. Don't forget, you burn calories just by breathing. I do have to admit though, that even though I know this, I used to be the worst at cutting my calories to under 800 and then try to figure out why I wasn't loosing weight and was tired to boot.
Sorry for the long post!

Thanx for all the input. Who is this "Nut" you are referring to?
Anyways, my biggest fear is post-op. I am a sugar junkie right now and I am trying to cut down. But since Christmas is coming up, it is really hard. In the New Year I will try harder. It is just the whole thought of no carbs or sweets at all is frightening. To me this is worse than quitting smoking, that I have done no problem, strange.
