Eating Habits
I was just wondering on the ladies who had the surgery already. What are your eating habits now? Does this stop you from eating sweets? I have not told alot of people what I am doing, but my best friend is scared that I will only beable to eat soup the rest of my life LOL. I told her that is not the case. That it will make you not eat as much since your stomach is smaller, you just can't go overboad.
But really, at 6 weeks out form having my sleeve, I can honestly say I eat less now than ever. My interest in food is gone, sometimies sparked by an enthusiasm that fades by the time i get my first bite in. I am NEVER hungry, but sometimes get weak when i forget to eat.
I have to force myself to eat and have been told to increase my calories by our NUT. Nothing tastes great and it is an effort to get in enough calories.
BUT you can try anything. I have tried a peice of chocolate. The difference between then and now is one piece has lasted me for two weeks. I have not been interested in trying it again and we have boxes of it in my house for fundraising.
I don't eat bread, pasta or rice or any carb like that because it doesn't feel well in the stomach as it expands.Every bite is protein and fibre secondary for me. I struggle to get my liquids in.
It's like you are reconciling the habits of an overeater with the new mind of a habitually thin person. I also found my appetitie is shrinking drastically instead of getting bigger. Maybe the sleeve is swollen in the first few weeks so eating more is easier because you don't fell the fullness with the swelling, but when the swelling goes down it is more realistic of what we can tolerate for me, it is not much, i would say currently about 1/4 c food at a time or 2 -3 tbsp. I will ask at my next appt.
I love my sleeve, it has changed my life already and it is only 6 weeks.
Hope this helps, we are all learning.

Hi there,
I WISH I was never hungry...lol.. I am one of those people who needs to use the sleeve as A TOOL for weightloss. Some people loose the desire to eat sweets (not me..lol) I am three months out and I now realize that this is a life changing decision for me and I still need to be responsable for what goes in my mouth.
Prior to surgery, I used to eat not only out of hunger. I ate because I was board, stressed, tired, cranky ...you name it. The sleeve is an AMAZING tool that is helping me along with my weight loss journey.
Tell your friend that you will be able to eat everything if you wish, but only in small portions.
Take care
Nikki

Hi,
I was sleeved the same day as Deb!! I echo her with the never being hungry,
As for the amount of food I can eat:
Tea cup of soup in one sitting.
Half McDonald's Cheese burger with one bun only.
Costco Chicken strip with the breading removed.
Half chicken breast done on the BBQ
1/4 russett potatoe
Small container of yogurt
12 pretzel sticks
1 cheese string
half banana
half can tuna with cottage cheese
I really am having head issues with the portions that I can eat, it is hard emotionaly to watch other people eat and enjoy their food. I am never hungry and eat only because it is time(every 2 hours). there is no enjoyment in eatting anymore! I suffer from acid reflux now too.
The 50lbs gone for ever is the only thing that keeps me going! I can drink the 2 litres of fluid no problem!! The protein is harder for me as I do not like the shakes anymore!
When I eat meat it feels like I am a snake that is trying to digest a cow! It moves very slowly down and then I feel sick almost and have to stand up at the table.
I hope this helps,
Michelle

Michelle, I couldn't have said it better! Do you find eating every 2 hours helps? I am terrible at going hours without eating and only dizziness reminds me to eat. I am not a poster child for following the regimen. I do understand what Nikki is saying about it being a tool. It is just as easy to fill up on bad food as good and we all need to re learn our eating habits while we are healing. It's the lack of desire that is blowing me away. My lack of interest in food is stronger as I heal instead of weaker!
For me there is no enjoyment in eating and if I didn't eat for a week I would be happy. I have not had meat (only ground turkey) and chicken makes me run for the hills, but eventually I think we can eat anything is small amounts. But where is the hunger????
Michelle, Nikki, anyone...do you find your weight loss is better when you eat more regularly or when you don't? The NUT seems to think I would lose more if I could eat more and sustain my calories. I can ony get in about 500 cals per day and am supposed to be at 1000. What is your daily calorie intake?
The issues we face are worth it. My weight loss to date(45 lbs) has allowed for a drastic reduction in my bp meds, and hopefully all my mds will be gone soon. My GP is thrilled! Any issues we face post surgery are worth it IMHO!

Deb,
If there was a pill that I could take that would replace eating I probably would do it. There is no enjoyment in eating anymore.
I had to cancel my appt with the nut, it was snowing and I had to work! I think that I am eating about 500-600 calories a day. I can drink all fluids in a day, but the protein thing is hard. I hate those shakes, shots and bars! So trying to get it from real food is very hard, considering I am never hungry.
Why did the nut say 1000 calories? I would have thought that was too many???? During my stall on the scale (almost 2 weeks), I was crying and thinking this was sooo not worth it. I went straight to the bag of pretzels and got my self some ranch dip and ate!! Every Night for a week straight. The next week I was expecting a increase in weight....but....I had lost 5lbs!! I think that my body had got used to the same food over and over again. I need to change it up a bit.
I ate Campbell"s Chicken Noodle soup for lunch 1/2 can and I ate the noodles too!! Some days are easier than others!

One of the reasons diets continuously fail is because of denial.
We deny all sorts of foods deemed to be bad for us...and in the end that denial becomes too intense and then we go crazy and binge insanely and hence, gain weight.
But we now have this fabulous tool that allows us to control those binges. I don't deny myself anything EXCEPT for carbonated drinks. I get very uncomfortable when I drink them, so it's just not worth it.
If there is a cheesecake staring at me, I will cut myself a very small slice and enjoy it to the fullest, and then I'm done. I do this all the time and I have not only got to my goal in 14 months, I'm now below it.
I have been very creative when it comes to food and protein and have gotten a lot of ideas from plusizedbarbie.blogspot.com
She's got some great recipes on there!
So, it's not the end of the world when it comes to food. There are days when I would kill to be able to scarf down a Hershey bar with almonds, but instead if there is some chocolate around, I'll grab a few small bites and call it good.

Are you able to eat rice, bread, pasta? I had my rny oct 25th, so far i've had a little of a tea biscuit and was okay and some noodles in soup.I was having a really hard time eating too, then just started having a bit of whatever my husband was having and that's been much better. He had a hamburger one day and give me some minus the bun. I would love to try a piece of toast but not sure about that yet. Also, would multigrain bread be okay?

I have tried rice and I loved it but didn't try it until I was a year out. I will only eat about 2 Tbsp when I do have it now. Same with pasta as well.
As for bread, my NUT said whole grain, whole wheat was just fine. I always have it toasted however, although having said that, I did try my first piece of untoasted bread today. It was sliced very thin, and delicious, but I had some mild discomfort afterwards.
Superstore has this bread called Canadian Harvest Bread and it's got whole grains and only 20g of carbs per 2 slices. That's amazing!! And it tastes really good toasted with a lil bit of butter, and a bit of no sugar added strawberry jam. Mmmmm yumm! That's like a treat for me, and yet it's totally healthy!

My MD went balistic when I told him that i was only getting in aound 600 calories in .(one month post-op) I now take in about 1200 per day. I feel great. I have lots of energy and my hair has stopped falling out. I can't live in a world with too much rectriction. I WOULD GO NUTS! I would obsess about what I couldn't eat and finially eat WAYYY too much of it. I agree with shroomy about the pop. I just get too "burpy" with it. Other than that I jus****ch my protion sizes.
We are all different and what works for me may not work for anyone else. I just have to keep telling myself that it is the "journey" not the destination
Have a great Day!!
