Life after my VSG.....3 weeks post op food
Like Michelle, I am 3 weeks post op today! I scoured these forums pre op looking for any info I could get to calm my pre op nerves and I promised myself I would post as much as I could to maybe do the same for others.
The hardest part for me was the two weeks pre op Meditrim before surgery and the liquids only post op. My recovery has been smooth and I was home in 3 days. The pain is minimal and the only side effect I feel today is that I get tired faster, to be expected. My incisions are healing great and I can move around as much as I can take. I can see my toes!!
I did not lose as much as many have posted pre op due to lack of drinking water, so ladies...drink your water! But I have made up for it post op! You don't feel the first post op week of clear liquids because the focus is on getting out of the hospital and maintaining your fluids. I am tolerating new foods very well and have never vomited or been nauseous. I am NEVER hungry and do have to remind myself to eat. I cannot eat more than 3 oe 4 tbsp. of anything at one time, and doI schedule and record everything I eat... protein grams, calories etc. and try a new food everyday.
By 2 weeks out I was eating creamed soups, cottage cheese, ricotta, yams, and have now graduated to mushies like eggs, turkey breast, cheese and shredded soft chicken.. As Julie and the Dr.'s say....whatever you can tolerate,
I hit a weight loss plateau 2 weeks out and was the same weight for almost a week! I was in tears as I was not eating much and soon discovered through trial and error that when eating something (a laughing cow cheese wedge or yogurt cup) every 2 hours accelerated weight loss. It has not stopped since!
The biggest problem I have had to date is constipation so ladies....drink tha****er and take Benefibre or Metamucil every day!! I also drank prune juice right out of the hospital as instructed by Julie. Very helpful I drink 2 litres of water every day and still have 2 protein shakes (Costco Premier Nutrition...the best!!) As the food variety increases, the shakes will go down to 1 a day over the next two weeks.
35 lbs. and counting.....it is SO WORTH IT! You will be so proud of yourself for taking charge of your life, I know I am! I could not have done this on my own.
I hope someone finds this info informative! This surgery is a gift and I hope the criteria expands soon!
Cheers,
Deb

Well thank you Deb and way to go!!!
You have given me the hope that it will be worth it....that I have not made a mistake!! I am having some bad gas pains on my left side and some gas pains in my chest but hoping each day will get better!
I am struggling to get my fluids in (straigh****er didn't sit well at all) and also having a hard time with the protein...just can't take the creamy vanilla taste ANYMORE!!!! But....you are my inspiration and after reading your post I will try harder!!
I just started my pureed stage with a couple tablespoons of blueberry greek yogurt and so far...so good! And boy was it amazing!!!! Tonight will be purreed chicken, hope that goes as well! Keep your fingers crossed!
35 lbs that is fabulous!!! A great accomplisment, pat yourself on the back for me!
Thanks for the update is was very useful and I totally appreciated it as I know others will! Please keep up the updates for us...love it!

Thanks everyone!
I know the gas pains and chest pains are a drag. I had bad chest pains from the gas for the first couple days in the hospital and it is frustrating to be sure. I know it can last up to 10 days so you should be nearing the end, and then comes the fun part! It will go away, everyone seems to have their own schedule. I called Julie a few times when I got home and she is great support too if you need it! You will wake up one of these days feeling great and then the journey begins of learning what your body can and cannot tolerate.
I really believe we will all have much more success with support and sharing our experiences. The more we share about our experiences, the more it helps us all.
