VSG Done Oct. 19th and I'm HOME!!!

Hi everyone,

Thanks for you kind thoughts.  Had the surgery done Oct. 19th and came home today!  It is overwhelming, and no matter how much I prepared, it was still a bit surreal.. So far, it is getting rapidly better each day, I have had little to no nausea and can move around pretty well as long as I take it easy  when I need to. Biggest problem was gas from when they inflate the stomach to do the surgery AND being in the OSA (Sleep Apnea) Risk room for the first 2 nights with 5 other patients at a time!  But after I got moved to my own room things improved.  The staff is great at the Vic and Dr. Andrew was terrific.

The first day I focused on nothing but pain control and being comfortable with morphine drip, torredol worked way better for me than morphine.  Second day, I focused on walking as much as I could and drinking water and protein drink as soon as I could.  I have switched to the Costco Premier High Nutrition shake (Dr. Andrew okayed) and it is FANTASTIC and way easier to get down than the one the hospital gives you.  As soon as you can maintain 120cc of fluid for 6 - 8 hours they will let you go home.

Thanks Tracey and everyone for your support!  The journey begins and I am so excited!!

That is so good to hear! I am very glad you are home safe and doing well!

Don't forget take it easy and don't overdo it...you just had major surgery!! Which protein shake were they giving you in the hospital? I will have to have some on hand for after my surgery, do you know the protein in it? I am sorry if I am bombarding you with questions and totally understand any delay!

Keep me posted on your progress and any tips would be welcomed!!

The Costco shake has 30G of protein and it is premixed and yummy!!  It has 1g sugar! and low fat.  The dietician at the Vic said it was better than anything else. It's expensive but well worth it to have a case ready for when you come home.  I just grabbed one out of the fridge and pour it into my little measuring cups.  I am working my way up to 2 a day in the next few days for 60 g protein for now.

The one at the hospital is Resource Diabetic and it is not good, very thick and heavy going down.
I also bought Iso Sensation 93 Vanilla Bean Protein Powder at Popeyes (Cookies and Creme is good too) with their special mixing cup.  Can alternate between these two to get the protein in these next few weeks.  Popeye's wil give you samples, this one is 32 g protein and fantastic tasting too.
Make sure you get a pill crusher for your multi vit and any meds they send home.

I am happy to keep you posted and answer ANY questions that may help. We need to help each other through this so ask away!!  Your turn is coming, and if I can do this anyone can!!

PS I also ate tbsp. of 1% cottage cheese on pre op when I got headaches and dizzy, really helped and my liver still shrunk apparently!

Thanks so much for all the great information you have provided for me and everyone else with upcoming dates!

I will be going shopping this week to stock up on some of these shakes for after surgery. Great information!

I will keep the cottage cheese in mind, I actually was craving pickles so bad today I had a BIG ONE!!!! It was amazing, not sure if they are allowed but I did read the label and it was under 5 cals, and < 1g carbs.....so good!!!

Take care Deb!!

Happy to hear you're home and doing better. I'm going in on Monday for my surgery.
I've already bought a case from Costco but i could only find the chocolate. did anyone find vanilla?
are you having broth?

I don't think they carry the vanilla.  The Iso Sensation 93 Vanilla Bean protein  powder from Popeye's is fantastic though.
Started on broth in the hospital, second thing after water.  The hospital broth is awful, have your family bring some for you like a good organic low sodium broth and put it in the patient kitchen. Good to start as soon as the water if you can, it goes down very easy.

Good luck with your surgery!  Wishing you a safe and speedy recovery! All the best.....
