What specific surgery is being offered in Winnipeg...Vertical Sleeve Gastric Bypass? Can't...

Hi!  I am new to this forum and have many questions but will start off with this one.  I was reffered to the Saint Boniface Surgical Associates of bariatrics in Winnipeg.  The 2 doctors that I know of are Dr. Braken and Dr. C. Andrews.  I was under the impression that it was a "LapBand" procedure until today!  I called Julie and she told me that it is a "Vertical Sleeve Gastric Bypass".  I am completely confused with this information seeing as all the research that I have done today only refers to 4 different surgeries.   1 being, "Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass ( RNY, RGB).  2 being, "Vertical Gastrectomy with Duodenal Switch (DS).  3 being, "Vertical Gastrectomy (VG).  And 4 being, "LapBand (LAGB)".  So I am confused as to what surgery specifically is a Vertical Sleeve Gastric Bypass...  Is anything actually bypassed like the intestines?  Because if so then I don't understand what the difference is between the "Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass.  The reason I would like to know is because like many of you, I am sure, I would like to be well informed and research this to its fullest.  As time keeps passing I should be receiving my appointment for intake very soon.  Julie did tell me it will roughly be in November that I should hear from them and now I am very nervous about this because of complications and risks and my time is coming quickly to make an informed decision!

Thanks so much in advance!

Hello,
It's great that you have a referral here in Wpg.  At the top of this page, you can check out the topic "weight loss surgery" and it will have info on the different types of surgeries.  I would google the different types of surgery and also ask people in their emails whether they would recommend their type of surgery.

I had the RNY over 2.5 yrs and have no regrets.  You can read my blog for more details.  I had to go out of province as Manitoba did not have this program, apparently they are not doing this type of surgery (RNY) yet.  I had to wait years and years for a consult, fly there then wait one more year for surgery.

I would recommend you go to other Canadian forums, other than Manitoba, especially Ontario, as they are so active (they have such large numbers of people going for surgery).  I asked questions there on their forum and asked for their comments (they are pretty friendly).

I am not familiar with all types of surgeries available and am not an expert.  I can comment on my type of surgery.  Ask people for their comments but really you have to make the decision.  I truely believe WLS is an excellent tool...... you can email at [email protected] if you want.

Are you in Wpg or outside of Wpg?   Good luck!
Diane

hi todyefor, I am glad you found this forum, it is very informative, and you will find some very knowledgeable people here. When i first found OH, i had a million questions, hence my sign in name. anyway, i have one question for you, and that is when was your referral sent in to the bariatric clinic?I am trying to guage where i stand on the waiting list. I was told six months last month, as a sept referral, so i am wondering if they are still on track. if so, i can safely assume that you were a feb or march referral? thx

In Winnipeg they are offering the sleeve, the bypass and the band . The gov't will pay for the first 2 but not the band.

Does anyone know if they have opened up the criteria yet.  It was under 55 and under 47  BMI.  I am waiting for it to open up, but I now have no GP Dr to refer me mine left his practice and did not fwd his files on.
