Had my first consult with Dr. Andrew today, who is a very nice man, and it's really gonna happen!! I should be getting sleeved sometime in November. I have to meet with the Nutritionist at the end of October and then should have a better idea of the date once I get all the tests done by my doctor and all the paperwork is sent in.

I am excited and scared and just wi**** was the day already, but I know that it will come soon enough.

hi there, that is excellent news. i am very excited for you. i have been reading these posts for some time now however was reluctant to join. i dunno why. anyway, do you happen to know what the low end of the bmi is to meet the mb health criteria. my bmi is 35 with hypertension. my md referred me on wednesday. im scared my bmi may be too low., i, like most people on this forum have been struggling with my weight for over half my life. this surgery would be a very helpful tool in my weight loss journey. anyway, any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated.  congrats, very excited for you

Hi back!

Here is a part of the letter that went out to doctors in February said:

Standard indications for bariatric surgery include:
1.Body Mass Index >40, or
2.BMI >35 with obesity-related comorbidities, and
3.Failure of a physician-supervised diet and excercise program.

Contradictions include:
1.Eating disorder (eg.bulimia) or untreated psychiatric disorder
2.Substance abuse
3.Non-compliance
4.Significant coronary artery disease or pulmonary hypertension
5.Immobility.

Initially, while we are gaining experience, patients must meet the following criteria:
1.Female
2.Age <55
3.BMI <47
4.Minimal comorbidities

When we are satisfied that the bariatric treatment team has garnered sufficient experience, we will extend these criteria to encompass a greater proportion of patients.

I think that this an excellent opportunity for Manitobans and couldn't be happier and luckier to be a part of it. I hope this helps and keeping my fingers crossed for you!!! Keep me updated. And FYI they don't let you know if you meet the criteria only if you don't. I called a couple of months after if was sent in to see if it was received. You might want to check with them too!

That's wonderful! All the best to you, your day will come soon enough.

Tell me how long were you on the waiting list? My doc just sent my referral last week. I meet all of the requirements so I'm hoping it will not be too long.

Keep in touch so we know how things are going :)

Thanks and I am trying to be patient! My doctor sent my referral in February, I think the 24th. So it has been, what has seemed like forever. I know that originally there were 2 doctors doing it and now they are going to be having 4 doctors doing the surgeries. Which is great news!!! I hope you don't have to wait long either, I know how it feels and it sucks! Let us know if you hear anything of if you call! I will definitley let you know, hopefully everything goes well and hoping for a November surgery!!!!

Congrats! I'm going to see the nutritionist this coming week. I'm still waiting for my surgery date though. Did you have a choice of sleeve or bypass? If yes, what made you decide on the sleeve?

Hi and thanks! You must be excited too! Let me know how it goes at the nutritionist. I wonder if they will give you a date then? I did have a choice, and decided on the sleeve because it is slightly less evasive and doesn't change the make-up of  your body. You can always have the bypass after if you don't lose enough weight with the sleeve, not that I really would want another surgery!!! Kinda scared!!! The only thing was they say, i don't know if it's true, you can reverse the bypass but not the sleeve. If anyone out there knows different please don't hesitate to inform me!

Good luck at your appointment and make sure and keep me updated!!!
