I am so tired of thinking why can't Winnipeg set up a Bariatric clinic and surgeon? Why does Manitoba have to be so difficult? It is bad enough that if you don't live in Winnipeg you must travel there to have anything medical done!  I wish I knew how to blow my horn to some high up government politicians about this. Oh well I guess I just continue to be P$#$off at Manitoba's medical issues.

Talk to you soon Stephanie

It's incredibly frustrating. I just got back from my consult. Victoria is GORGEOUS!!! Dr. R was really nice and the internist was super kind and understanding. Manitoba Health has approved me for 2 visits. One for the consult and one for the surgery. I have to go back to see the rest of the specialists before the surgery but its not covered. I'm going to fight for it. But, I shouldn't have to. It sucks that we have to fight this at all. We have enough to contend with, the surgery is a huge deal.

I think I am going to have some Winnipeg people from the forum over to chat. Let's get together and give each other strength to make this endeavor successful. Much love to you all, talk to you soon!!

I'm glad your consult went well. I gettting ready this weekend doing laundry, last min cleaning tasks, then packing. Found someone to care for our cats so leaving Tuesday for Victoria. I'm excited, forgetting what to ask Dr. even though i wrote it down. Oh Boy my brain cells are tad loose.. lol.

Yea apparently you need to get your surgeon or GP to write a detailed letter explaining the reasons for that many visits..its normally ok'd, just a real pain in the... to deal with. That why my arrangements were held up but now I'm all set. Love to meet with all someplace soon.

Hi there

just thought i would add to this conversation.  Any visits outside of the initial consult, surgery, and one post op you will have to go to appeal with manitoba health.  I did this and i won.  But get ready, manitoba health has a physician and a lawyer to argue why they should not have to pay for any extra visits.  I was very fortunate that i had a lawyer that was on the appeal board and he helped me along although im sure he wasnt supposed to.  In the end i won and had all of my 6 flights covered.  I was very fortunate.  Good luck and get ready to go to appeal if you need to,

good luck

Hi again

No, you dont need a lawyer, but when you go to appeal it is you versus manitoba health.  They will have a lawyer and a physician to try and dismiss all of your needs for any additional flights for your surgery.  The appeal board consisted of 5 members, there was a nurse, a lawyer, the rest i have no idea what there professions were.  The appeal board listens to both sides meaning you and the manitoba representatives being the lawyer and the physician.  I represented myself and brought my mother with me for support.  You must have copies of all letters that your physician submitted, any specialists reports, anything that can help your claim and copied of everything has to be submitted to the appeal board for their review prior to your hearing.  It was a bit intimidating as the mb health lawyer is a lawyer and he knows the mantoba health act.  The lawyer that was on the appeal board panel, which is unbiased and just hears both sides, was very helpful to me.  He asked question of the mb health lawyer that i never would have even thought of.  In the end, the lawyer for the unbiased appeal board said " it sounds  like manitoba health is willing to pay for surgery but not the costs required to get to that surgery which doesnt make any sense"  That statement made me a winner.  Just remember that statement and use it when you go to appeal, it made a big impact for me.  Good luck, if you need further help im right there for you.  Good luck.

Thank you so much for telling us all this. I wish they would change thier policy and let us go for more appointments without going to an appeal board. Doesn't that just waste everyones time and money?

Hi again

It does waste time and money.  I brought that up at the appeal hearing.  Im sure that lawyer and physician that were representing manitoba health were worth a preety penny.  Not to mention paying the 5 appeal board memebers.  I mentioned that very point at the hearing but i think i was talking on deaf ears at that point because that was not the purpose of the appeal.

good luck to all who appeal, you can do and win!!!!
