does anyone know of ...

does anyone know of a gastric bypass surgeon in Canada that will do the procedure on someone over the age of 50? My family doctor has contacted 2 doctors in Alberta and they both will not do the surgery on any one over age 50.

I just saw Dr. Nohr in Medicine Hat, Alberta and I am 48, I am scheduled for surgery next year and I will be 49 yrs. Have you tried Dr, Nohr`s office... Diane

Hi Christine: I live in Ontario and I am 57 years old. I had my RNY surgery in Detroit Michigan because there were no surgeons who would do surgery on someone over 50 in Ontario. I want to tell you that because it is a covered surgery but there are no doctors who will do it for you, you can go to the States and have it done. Mine was covered by OHIP which is Ontario Health Insurance Plan which is the government health. I am sure you can do the same thing in Manitoba you just have to be informed and even be the pioneer in your Province to do it. We have been doing it since 2003 here and more people are sent out then have it done in Ontario because of the wait times. hello christine my name is annette and i am also from portage la prairie i moved here a few years ago.i have been looking for weeks in finding a gastric bypass surgeon, in canada.i had a doctor from new york that was willing to help me and he tried manitoba health and didn't have any luck.i have tried a few in alberta and haven't been successful.i have searched the net for so many hours already and can't seem to find a doctor in canada.if you have had any success please let me know.hope to hear from you soon. thanks annette

Hi Annette, glad to hear that there is someone else from Portage. Dr Garip referred me to Dr Amson in Victoria BC. I have a consult appointment with him on Aug 12 2008, I know that is a long time to wait but I understand there is a lot of tests etc that you have to go for before hand.
