Need a Doc
I live in Elie, MB. Just got surgery in Edmonton with Dr. Davey/Dr. Birch. Manitoba doesn't have anyone to help with obesity...believe me I tried since 2002 and I finally just got the laprascopic roux en y gastric bypass and feel great so far! Manitoba Health covered the cost of the surgery.
My GP in Winnipeg is Dr. T. Gooi at the Westwood clinic - 832-1363...he is fairly easy to get in to see and he now has the experience with me for obesity!
Good luck.
Wait times for any surgeon in any Canadian province is in excess of 2 years for a consult, and anywhere from 4 to 8 years until surgery. Believe me, I called them all just a few months ago before deciding to self-pay. That is insane - I could be dead by then if anything got worse!!
I just had surgery with Dr. Christou in Montreal last Tuesday, and although I had to self-pay (I can claim some back from MB Health and my work insurance) it was worth more than wasting my youth, possibly dying while waiting, or never being able to have children...
His website is: www.weightlossurgery.ca
Good luck!
hello

Manitoba Health will pay for the entire surgery, plus travel costs (minus hotels & food) for you to have the surgery in another province, except Quebec. You need a referral from your doctor to a doctor in another province, you then call Manitoba Health travel subsidy department - they will send you forms to fill out and then send you a letter of approval. The surgery is paid through interprovincial billing - you don't pay anything. Your plane or bus ******oney is reimbursed once you send in an expense form. It took me 15 months from time of referral to date of surgery. If you need more information just ask.
Actually, Manitoba Health will only pay IF you get the surgery done at another publicly-funded clinic in Canada. Most publicly-funded clinics in Canada either have a 3-5 year (plus) waiting list, do not accept out-of-province referrals, or do not accept referrals for people over 50 years old. In other words, it's going to be a long wait if you even get a referral! I decided to go the private clinic route because I could just not wait that many years and it seemed every publicly-funded clinic that my doctor and I tried had instituted one or both restrictions regarding out of province and over 50 years!
