Hello, VERY new to this.. just started the process in Oct.. (it takes a while I guess) anyway.. Originally I was think'n Lap Band just becuase its reversable and left abrasive... BUT.. Would I ever really want it reversed? Does any of the RNY people regret do'n this at all? Issues with complications? I'm go'n to the weight center at UMASS in Worcester and just pondering the idea of the RNY instead as this was suggested over the lap band with my situation with the DR at the Weight Center.. I donno.. ok back to my original question... Does anyone regret teh RNY?

Hi John I am pre- op sio I can not answer your question about regrets. But I would like to add my 2 cents worth in for all it's worth. If you are thinking reversal pre-op I would think long and hard about doing anything this is a 110% commitment to eating right and taking care of yourself and your health. I am having mine done on the 20th of January. The last thing on my mind is a reversal. I am thinking on the size 10 swim suite for next summer .... I wish you luck keep us posted. Hugs Loretta

Hello Ya know I fear'd the answer that you just gave me. Thought about that after I posted. I guess my problem is that I'm very skeptical about EVERYTHING.. not just this surgury but everythin in general so this iwould be typing think I ask. I think the only real reason why i mention reversal is becuase I was wondering if there was ever a problem or complicated that happened where someone wished they had a reversal. I'm just try'n to get over some of the risk factors..

I had my RNY surgery in May, I've lost about 97 pounds post op. When I started my process I researched both the band & the Gastric. I attended support meetings and asked a lot of questions to the post ops. I met a lot of people that had RNY and had complications, when I asked if they regretted it, they said at first but once everything stabilized they would have done it again in a heartbeat. I personally (knocking on wood) have not had any complications post op. I rarely dump, and my diabetes is gone, my sleep apnea is gone, my acid reflux disease is gone, and I went shopping in a non-plus sized store for the first time since I was 12 years old. I don't regret a thing. I chose not to do the band because this was a huge decision and If I was going to do this I was going to go all the way. Good luck with your journey!

I had my Open RNY on Feb 7th 2002. I lost 120 pounds, high blood pressure, type II diabetes, throbbing feet and my self-hate. I gained....a life. I will tell you that the way I eat has changed drastically.....mainly because I was ready to get the food out of my way. This surgery gave me the tools to do that. I do not eat sugar....ever. I have not eaten from a fast food place since my surgery. I had one dumping episode, from something I ate and did not check what was in it (duh). Once was enough for me. Now, if I do not know what is in it....it does not go into my body. I will admit that I am very rigid about what I will and will not eat, but that is what works for me. So...in answer to your question....no...I never once regretted my decision to have the RNY. It is the best decision I ever made for myself. Good luck

John, I think that no matter which procedure you choose, you need to be well informed to make your decision. Keep reading the OH site-read specific forums and ask questions as you are doing now. I think most of all, you will determine if you can accept "this side effect" with one surgery, or a "different side effect" with the other surgery. Most of all, both the surgeries have been a tool to help folks loose weight and keep it off. I wish you luck in your journey, and whichever surgery you choose-I wish you a successful surgery. Joan F

Hiya! To be brutally honest, there were/are moments I regret it, BUT (and this is a big ole but... ) NOTHING tastes as good as *almost* thin feels...I'm not all the way there yet. The moments are few and far between, like at a food-buffet style party, when you realize you're not able to stuff your face and you feel a tiny twinge of jealousy--- then you remember WHY you're doing this, and you instantly feel better! This surgery should be performed on our BRAINS not our BELLIES, because that's where the problems are--- it's all in our heads--- and head hunger is so hard to fight. Can you think of any reason you'd WANT to reverse your surgery? I doubt it--- I mean, unless you wanted to regain, right? So, give that some thought. I had the RNY at NEMC last April 5th. I've lost 140 lbs since that day, and 155 total since pre-op loss. I don't regret one BIT of that part! It's so good! -Beth 313/298/158/130

The program at UMASS is an outstanding program, John. When you are at the top of the list, if you are still uncertain, be completely honest and postpone your surgery until you truly know which type of surgery you want. Personally the thought of having to have a needle inserted into my abdomen on a regular basis did not appeal to me. I do think that you should be completely certain before your surgery because it does require such firm commitment and control, you do not want to be second guessing your decision on a bad day. I do feel though with the UMASS program, by the time you are assigned a surgery date.. You will have enough information to make a firm decision about what is right for you. Good luck, I had my surgery in may and have lost about 125 pounds, 100 of them are post op. Su Ellia

I had my surgery on December 6th at Mercy Hospital in Springfield. NOT ONE MOMENT OF REGRET. The weight is coming off, I am down to 4 meds instead of 9 and I am feeling good. I would do it in an instant all over again. I researched, explored, asked questions and just plain knew that I was tired of being a prisoner in my own body. Life is good. Monica

Hello John!! I had my surgery at Bay State in Springfield. I had it done on June 8th. I am down 93lbs from my highest weight. 85 since surgery. I've gone down from a 24 jeans to a 14/12 in some styles. I no longer have Sever sleep apnea, nor do I have anymore gout or feet problems. I also don't have to take med's for Bladder control anymore. As for complications. I didn't have any to speak of. I rarely dump and though I know it's hard sometimes to figure out if your still hurgery or if it's head hunger, I would do it all over in a heart beat!!! I had the RNY Lap. All I had for my troubles are 6 tiny holes and a whole new me. And the funny part is I really don't miss sugars THAT much because I find stuff that I like thats either sugar free or low in sugar AND sugar alchols{spelling}. Do your research and best of luck to you on your decision. ~ Mary 268/260/175/145 someday
