question about Brigham & Womens hospital
I know someone have RNY(open) at this hospital. She had told me that (exact quote): "the problems they were having here was the staplegun kept misfiring and poking other organs so laproscopic was banned here", and people were dying from it which is why they banned it. I was just curious about this and I hope that someone could clear this up for me.
Thanks,
Jessica
HI Jessica,
I had an open RNY there in FEB of 2002. There was one incident this year of a staple gun misfiring during a lap procedure. After a complete investigation .....they have resumed lap procedures at BWH. It was an equipment malfunction....not doctor error that caused this death. This is the only death that I know of that had to do with the staple gun at this hospital. I hope this helps. Kim
There was a staple gun accident last October. The Physician was not found to be at fault. Now they check the stomach after the surgery with a "dye" to make sure no leaks. Massachusetts Dept of Public Health did an investigation and found no physician error. You can visit the Mass Dept of Public Health for their report on weight loss surgery. This report came about because of deaths at several hospitals, and the state wanted WLS guidelines and best practices.
You can google for it, as well as the news reports of the staple accident.

Just to add... B&W also hired a lap specialist, Dr. Ashley Vernon, late last fall who ONLY does surgeries laprascopically. She does the Lap Band, not RNY, but is supposed to be very good at what she does.
Even knowing of this incident, I still decided to have my surgery at the Brigham. 1) I trust Dr. Vernon, 2) even with this death B&W still has a mortality rate below the state and national average.
Take care,
Caeli
