Hello all!

I'm almost 3.5 yrs post op and am regaining weight. I'm not exercising, though I have at least improved my eating habits over the past few months. I have NO motivation to do what I should, and wanted to know if anyone else was stuck in this kind of rut. If so, how did you pull yourself OUT of it? I'm not sure what to do to dig my way out of this (I guess you'd call) mild depression.

Thanks in advance,
Marie

Hey Marie!
I'm sorry you're having a hard time right now... I know how hard it can be to get motivated and get out there and exercise. I see that you are in Easton ... there are a ton of us on here from that area and we have a local support group in Bridgewater - you should come to one of our meetings We will be meeting the last Monday in November - if you would like to come feel free to message me and I will get you the details!

There are also a bunch of us from the group that get together quite often and do group activites and go on exercise outings (trust me its a lot of fun!!)

Just try to find something you like and stick with that exercise for a while ... do you have a dog? You could go for a nice walk with him/her.

You have improved your eating habits, which is a great step!! I hope someone else can post their suggestions and help you get back on track!!!

:::hugs:::

Hi Kate!!

I've been to one meeting at Lisa's home so far and missed the October meeting. I've got it in my planner for November!  I think so far, I'm the one who's the longest post op in the group, so it's a bit daunting for me. :) I do have a few things I like, but weight lifting alone isn't enough and with a few limitations I need to find workarounds. I know there is a meeting tomorrow night in Quincy (my original group) and I'm going to try and leave work early to make that one as well.

I have to wonder where my oomph for good health went? It's almost like I no longer believe I'm worth that. I think THAT is at the crux of my lack of motivation. As a new post-op I was lovin the weight loss, the energy, the exercise, the whole "It's all about me" journey. Now I'm way beyond the honeymoon phase and as my daughter says...it's been swell, but the swelling's gone down!! LOL..It's SCARY...I'm learning sugar, fats, and candy don't make me dump anymore...(so I have a few extra pounds to go with it).

Thanks for your post and I'm defiinitely making that next meeting come hell or high water!

I've been there! I totally sympathize with you, it's not easy to find the motivation once it's been zapped- I honestly think it might be one of the hardest things to do- but if you can give yourself just an inch or so of motivation (as hard as it is!) you should be able to get back on track.

I broke my ankle this summer, so I was off exercising & put on a few pounds, which are now gone. I just started back at the gym about 2 weeks ago & since I can't run for a while I have to find other things to do which is great- love being creative when it comes to exercising.

Anyway! Here are some things I try to keep in mind when I find the motivation slipping away...
- I start a food journal, even if its only for a couple of days. I write down everything I put in my body.
- I do remember that pre-surgery, if I ever had only 5-10lbs to lose, I would've jumped for joy.
- I mix it up with exercise. I started yoga recently, yoga classes can be expensive, so I went on YouTube and found basic yoga videos that I can do in my house... similar to that if you have Netflix, there are instant exercise videos that you can watch.
- Try 3 days of the cleanest eating you know how to do. Get back to basics, all your vitamins, all your protein, really low carbs, etc... you can do anything for 3 days, right?
- Get outside even for 10-20 minutes a day. Makes a huge difference, especially if it's sunny.
- Don't try to exercise too much if you've had a big break. Do a day on, a day off, etc. Whatever works.

Don't be too rough on yourself!! It will pass....
"Another day.  Another chance to feel healthy."

Thank you so much for your post!! All the advice I've gotten on this thread has been so supportive and really wonderful! I've talked with my nutritionist today and she gave me some of the same advice she gave me a year ago. I'm tired of floundering, but also know I have to pull myself up and move it myself.

I've been eating much better and have dropped a pound or two. I know if I add exercise I'll be better off. I think there's Yoga on demand too with Comcast. I DO know they have an exercise channel I'll be checking out,. Also, I just started taking Wellbutrin. With any luck at all, it'll work for me.

Here's to yet another start!
