Interesting Info at Hospital support meeting...

So I went to my monthly support meeting at Tufts and one of the Surgeons stated....

There are studies being done in other countries (China being one of them)   That they are doing gastric bypass surgery on patients of normal BMI say 24...  but have  Type II diabetes....   The surgery resolves the Diabetes but yet they loose no additional weight.... hhmmmm  I find this fascinating how our bodies work.....   Glad to know that in near future maybe Gastric Bypass won't only be linked to helping people with Obesity...

That's awesome! My father is one person who could potentially greatly benefit from it; he is not overweight but has lived with diabetes most of his life.

This was being done in south America around the time I had my surgery.  They skip the pouch part, but bypass part of the intestine and PRESTO, no more type 2 diabetes. 

I remember my mom being SUPER jealous at my post-op appointment when my surgeon told her about it.  Glad China is on the bandwagon.  Someday in the USA...

I know people (who are obese, not BMI's of 24) that had RNY and never took their diabetes meds AGAIN!! It's amazing!

When my room mate had her surgery she came home sleep apnea free, go figure!! She seriously never needed her machine again and didn't even snore the next day after surgery and she was BAD!! It's amazing how things can change in a matter of 24 hours.

yes I just thought that was soooo facinating...  It's amazing what they can do....
I think the US will be last on this bandwagon.....    Surgeon mentioned something like the US has a higher Obesity/Type II ratio then any other country...  

Also they mentioned the vertical sleeve is now being done in Mass and a few Insurance are now covering it...  There was a women who had it done at tufts....  she is now Diabetes free too!!!
