I RAN a 5K - official rime: 33:59
Several years ago I walked in the breast cancer 3-day event. I was so very proud of my ability to train and walk much of that event, even at 250 lbs.
I told my therapist at the time that I really hope it helps me reach a goal of mine, which is to run. I have a childhood trauma that left me with nightmares that I can't scream or run. I have learned that I CAN scream (oh man, you don't wanna hear it), but in my dreams and while awake, i really couldn't run.
Today, I ran. Ok, well, I've been running for 2 months now, training for this event. But today, I ran in a race, starting alongside my sister and my brother-in-law. We did not run together or finish together, but they were with me the whole way. I finished in 35 minutes, 5 minutes behind my sister and 4 minutes ahead of my brother-in-law. We were all very proud of eachother, but they made a point of telling me how far they knew I've come and were so proud of my run.
I feel like my mental health has been bettered even more than physical health sometimes. Today was a great day for my whole body.
I hope you all try to make your dreams come true, and try something new!!!!!

agreeing to take on the challenge takes on an amazing amount of courage, so I applaud you! I know that running outside more than on a treadmill helped me A LOT, cuz it's NOT the same.
Good luck and report back!!!
Best,
Sue

Congrats!! On the time- on finishing- on how I know you felt when you hit the tape, so to speak. It really is quite an accomplishment.
My first 5K after surgery was a year ago September & I remember feeling like "oh, so THIS is what it feels like to triumph over your own body." Truly amazing.
Careful of the races though, they are very, very addictive once you get going.
Now I am a crazed maniac (or a "psycho" as my daughter calls me) going for a Boston Marathon qualifying time. You might not believe me, but its not that far from your first 5K to believing you can lay the smackdown on 26.2 miles.
I'm running the Tufts 10K on Monday in Boston, PM me if you're at all interested. Good luck in your next race!!
