Who had/has Dr. Sheldon Randall as their surgeon?
I guess I'm just trying to feel him out. He seems very confident, but also very reserved. I've discussed him with a few people who aren't familiar with him and they seem to buck over the fact he ONLY performs open RNYs. I asked him about that and he said that when an open RNY is done, the work inside is to switch things around is less aggressive vs a lap RNY where it's less aggressive on the outside but more aggressive to switch things around on the inside.
What was your hospital stay like? How long did it take for you to recover and what was your weight loss like? I'm just curious about EVERYTHING LOL.
Thanks.

I see that you are in Winchester. Have you checked into Winchester Hospital and their program? My only thought on the open vs. Lap is he does not know how to do the Lap...there is absolutely NO reason to have open when lap is available. My doc says this all the time.
I would do some research. Open is not the way to go. You are more likely to get an infection AND recovery is far longer. I went home (had lap RNY) on NO pain meds and so did everyone I know who had my doc. RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH.
Your gut is telling you something...go with it.

I'm definitely going to get a second opinion. Having children has taught me to do that with everything LOL. I haven't checked into Winchester Hospital, honestly I didn't think to. I have had more than enough bad experiences there unfortunately, so my first instinct is to steer clear of that place. Although, others swear by that hospital. My PCP is with Hallmark Health and my other specialists are with MGH. My PCP is referred me to him, they are both part of the same health care system.
It's not so much that I'm opposed to the open RNY, I just want a good reason why I shouldn't automatically go for the less invasive option.
I followed up with Dr. Randall with my questions and his explanations make sense. I mean after all he has done more surgeries than anyone else in New England and his statistics speak volumes about his work. His rate of complications with open RNYs are even less than the national rate with Lap Bands, which are considered the least risky.
All in all, I'm just taking in as much info as I can. I've started making all the appointments and evaluations required by my insurance, so that when I decide which surgeon all my ducks will be in a row.
Thanks!

Dr. Randall is very self confident. When I had my consultation appointment he made me feel at ease. He answered all my questions. I was a little bit apprehensive about having the RNY open, but as time went on the decision felt better. I had come across many of his previous patients. They only had good things to say about him.
My hospital stay was fine. Dr. Randall made his rounds twice a day. I had a fever my second day and I was brought down to have a swallow evel. to make sure I did not have any leaks. Dr. Randall stayed with me to make sure there were no leaks. Due to my job Dr. Randall required me to take off six weeks. At two weeks I drove to the mall and did some Christmas shopping. I have lost 125 pounds in about 16 months. Good luck on your research. Feel free to ask any questions that may come up.

My hospital stay was 2 days, I took 6 weeks off . of work , I could have gone back at 4. He was wonderful and checked up on me two to three times a day . He is highly regarded, in this field. You have to feel comfortable with who you choice and your decision, I have never been sick once in a year and have never thrown up. I am down 120 and still losing. You have to go with your gut feelings. His support groups are wonderful and help because this is just a tool. We have to work at this for the rest of our lives. Good Luck
I did not have Dr. Randall, and the reasons I did not were watching my friend have him as a doctor. Although she loved Dr. Randall, she had very bad experiences with the hospital itself, and in the end, she was doubting Randall himself. I have had many experiences with the facility, and quite frankly I felt that the hospital itself does not provide the level of care that I wanted. I watched my family stay there as patients and I refuse to be treated there. My PCP is with Hallmark Health as well, and I asked her for a referral for Newton Wellesley, where I had an awesome experience. My friend who had hers done at Hallmark even commented that she wished that she had gone elsewhere. Frankly, I was also really taken a back by someone that would not do it lap, when the recovery time is so much quicker and easier. I highly recommend Newton Wellesley. I know 6 people so far that have had their surgery done there, and we all felt that the experience was better than expected. I cannot sing their praises enough.
