x-post from RNY forum. Things I'm surprised at.
Things I did not fully expect to know/learn/experience on this journey - 6 month out edition.
At 6 months out, here's what I'm encountering:
1. everyone notices the dramatic weight loss and tell you how great you look.
2. you start to wonder if you looked so awful before ( i was a confident obese person - thought I looked great)
3. Some people are jealous of your weight loss and say bizarre things to you (or don't even mention it even though they are your best friend who you haven't seen in person for 3 years - showed up at her doorstep and NOT A WORD).
4. You wonder if people are disappointed since you no longer fulfill the role of "fat friend". I personally never knew that my job was to make everyone else look better by being fat.
5. Shopping for clothes is a wonderful new form of exercise.
6. Yup, still hate the gym.
7. the skin that remains is not pretty, but easy to hide in clothes. Put on your best self-confidence for bathing suit season
8. Food - its just fuel to keep you going. Unless it's sugar free ice cream - then it's a yummy treat.
9. Cravings still happen. you can ignore them, eat something sensible instead, or just eat a bite of whatever it is and enjoy that bite.
10. it's crazy that something you once ate/drank constantly and loved can taste so different and disappointing now. Thanks for the memories diet coke, chocolate chip cookies, brownies and cake.

Lol !! I especially loved # 2 and 4 !! I'm 7 weeks out - still a baby I guess - but have noticed some of these already - at this point the biggest thing I've learned is that I DO have will power - I have been able to follow my "new life Plan" to the "t" - go figure! I loved your comment about the gym - I don't go to the gym - I do my treadmill here at home - and I hate it - more everyday - keep wondering when I'm going to like - guess I know now - never !! Thanks for sharing !
You just may start to like exercise. you may just not like doing the treadmill at home. We got a puppy and I love walking outdoors, exploring new places. Maybe I've been hiding my inner hiker underneath all that weight!

So I relate to #4 and #3. Some people just don't know how to deal with their own emotions. They like to have someone around them that is bigger so they can not feel so bad about themselves. Too bad for them. I am going down, down and down some more!
Yes you are!!!
(my bestest friend after losing weight with weigh****chers referred to me as "the same as her, but bigger". I've never been sensitive about my weight, but that threw me over the edge and was angry and hurt. we've moved on from that, and now i can see how hard it is for her that I've reached her size and am slowly shrinking smaller. I keep reminding her that my success takes nothing away from HER success!)

Sue.....
well said!
2# ... everyday I always think...."I looked DREADFUL before, how could I have left the house?"
#3 ... a few friends seem very awkward around me....it's just very uncomfortable.
#7....we'll find the courage to do plastics someday :)
#10..I was a diet coke junkie and I stopped drinking it 6 months preop. then I had some a month before surgery and it was NASTY!
Keep up the great work!
I don't know what I need more for plastics...courage or money! Maybe our get togethers should be fundraisers! LOL
Keep up your great work - and I'd love to see your greeting cards someday (I was reading your profile). I have a friend who has an invitation design business. :)

Oh don't you love the people who say NOTHING at all? I can't even be sympathetic to that, it's just rude.
The thing that really shocked me was a few weeks ago my sister and I were out buying mulch at Home Depot & each bag was around 15lbs. We bought 7 bags which comes out to pretty much exactly what I've lost. Not only could I not believe how much space it took up on the cart, but the cart was really not that easy to push. I just thought, "How did I EVER walk around with all of that weight?"
