my first protein shake
i've been collecting samples. vanilla, chocolate, chicken broth, chocolate mint, fruit punch...
powders, ready to drink, every brand i could think of or find. I hadn't bothered to try them before now because...well, i don't really like fruity drinks now, nor do I drink milkshakes, frappes, chocolate milk now either. just aren't things I like. so it was unlikely i was going to find one i like now, just to have surgery and may not like it later.
Anyway, i knew that i should have some knowledge of what to expect, as far as texture, etc. and after a stressful preop appointment, i'm ready to prove to myself and whoever wants to pay attention that i'm ready for this. So i made myself an orange flavored "shake" to drink during my commute. it wasn't AWFUL. it's not fabulous either, but but of 16oz, i've had about 12oz so far.
For those of you afraid of these things...If I can do it - you can too.
Maybe tomorrow will be carnation instant breakfast. :)

I did the same thing with protein bars and Isopure right after surgery, I went to Vitamin Shoppe and stocked up on samples.
I ended up loving the Whey Protein Isolate from GNC which comes in a ton of flavors, also love the Whole Foods Whey Protein, my current favorite is Jay Robb's protein powder which is expensive, but I buy it by the individual sample so I don't choke on the price.
Speaking of choke, people rave about the Isopure in the support group meetings, but that protein just about put me over the edge. Same with the bullets.
Good luck!!

hi Sue,
Here are some of my ideas about protein shakes.
Drink them very cold - mix the shake with water or skim milk in a blender with some ice cubes. You can even add some frozen fruit to vary the floavor. I found this best prior to surgery.
Drink them warm. Protein powder can be mixed with liquids not warmer than 130 degrees. Warm the liquid, measure the temperature, then slowly add it to the powder while stirring.
I found that after surgery, my pouch liked warm liquids.
good luck on your upcoming surgery.
Jayne

thanks Jayne. I have your samples with all my others. I'm expecting some warm chocolate to be quite nice this time of year.

Good job, Sue! It's nice to be able to vary your liquids, pre-op. But don't be too disappointed if you end up not liking what you loved - post-op.
I thought my two weeks of liquids went very well and I had no trouble finding different combinations. Lo and behold, after surgery, I cannot stomach the thought of a protein shake.
Someone once told me "they play with your head" in surgery - and I laughed - but she was right!
Keep up your wonderful attitude, Sue.

I use the CIB stuff every day, and mix strawberries or banana or blueberrys into it for extra flavor. We put whey protein (choc. flavor), and also some flaxseed that my dh needs, and crushed ice for a cold smoothy. But probably my taste buds aren't very discriminate, because I can't tell the difference between one whey protein and another. As long as I get the protein in, I'm happy.
