Getting ready, surgery is Tuesday, any suggestions on things i will need?
Hi Kristene...its great that your date is right around the corner! I had surgery on the 26th, so still pretty fresh and sore.
I would definately by some sugar free popsicles, they have been a life saver for me, and low fat chicken bullion cubes. I bought a snow cone machine and eat ice all the time. Im definately having trouble with my fluid intake.
As far as the hospital goes, dont take anything nice to sleep in, just wear the same clothes home that you came in with. Make sure they are lose and comfy. Make sure you have some kind of lip balm as well. I took a small portable table fan (bought it at wal-mart for $5 and it worked perfectly). I would also recommend some ear plugs as well in case you have a noisy neighbor like I did. You wont need much else. Oh yeah, ask them to give you a pill crusher before you go home (all hospitals have them for patients).
good luck and let us know how you did!

hi Kristene,
The earplugs are a great suggestion. I was behind the nurses' station and it was so noisy. I had my husband bring my favorite pillow in, once I got to my room. There is nothing like your own pillow! When you can'r sleep, get up and walk. I think that was one of the reasons that I had negligible pain.
I love sugar free pops. I also used cans of low-fat broth. My pouch really liked warm liquids. If the protein drinks are too thick, add some skim milk. You can heat whey protein to 130 degrees without making the protein change texture. If you have powders, heat the milk, check the temperature, then slowly stir it into a cup with the powder (to minimize clumping).
If you have problems with water, add crystal light or 4C flavor packages.
The most important thing in the first few weeks is to let your pouch heal - take it easy. Don't pu****
good luck,
Jayne

just remember to have an alternative protein source at home...incase one doesn't agree with your stomach or bowels. I took my MP 3 player, and my face routine stuff (I have sensative facial skin) I also took my comfy slippers, flip flops and I wore my comfortable slip on walking shoes...for you will need to walk the halls. I also brought my own undies for after the surgery. Nothing feels better than your own undies!
I am sure you will do well....check back with us when you get home.
