Thyroid surgery

I have thyroid surgery on thurday and I am very nervous being in the super obese category.  The stress before surgery is unbelieveable and of course that is making me nervous about my future with the RNY.

Has anyone else here had thyroid surgery? My surgeon said he had operated on patients larger than I am, and that he didnt think my weight would be an issue, but still Im not sleeping well or anything. (I have been diagnosed with anxiety)

Im going in ALONE as I have no family backup, they still, even after biopsy can not tell me if its cancer or not, soooo hence the stressors. First, I just want to get through it o.k., then Im hoping that I will wake up to them telling me I am CANCER FREE...and hopefully my hubby can get the kids together to come visit.

So.. how did you all do it with your surgery? I mean I know the RNY carries a higher risk than a thyroid surgery. How did you stay calm? I need pointers, I havent had surgery since I was 5 and had my tonsils (sp) out.

Hope you dont mind the vent, you all have been so wonderful and helpful... with family its hard because no one is in my weight range and they just dont "get it." Im sure not ready to have something go wrong, the reason for my decision for RNY in the first place was to be around longer for my children. So.. im hoping the surgery this week is a breeze.

Thanks for listening! :)

I think it may be a little different going into thyroid surgery as opposed to RNY surgery.  RNY surgery is optional and you're choosing to have it done whereas the thyroid surgery is necessary, right?

For me, I was very excited to have RNY, and the only time I got nervous was when I was in the room and they were prepping me, but then the meds kicked in and I was feeling just fiiiiiine.

Good luck with your surgery and I hope and pray everything goes well and you have a speedy recovery.

Take Care,

I was a reck going into rny sugery.  Like you my biggest fear was waking up. My doctor put me at ease, he told me he has never had anyone not wake up.  I just had it last week and I am on the mend.  I am glad it is behind but I still worry about other things. it is our nature. I will say once I was at the hospital I was ready. Medicine has come a very long way and thye are very careful. Best of Luck

Thank you both so much, I think once the med**** I will be Fiiiiiine too, lol. You just never realize how much you have to live for until something like this shakes you. This thyroid issue is actually what made me make my RNY decision. I just thought, geez if I make it through and dont lose to cancer, why would I want to die of obesity? It was a huge lightbulb moment!  I mean not that I just made the RNY decision lightly, I had been considering it for 10+ years, but this was the straw I think that made the load unbearable.

Thanks for the pep talk!! I really needed it. Hopefully I wont be this nervous with my RNY, but at least I have a bit more time to take off some pounds before that happens too which will make me feel a little better!!
