Perm for your hair=hair loss???

Hello, Does anyone know if having a perm 4 or 5 weeks after surgery causes any additional hair loss in the short term or the long term? I cut my hair short before the surgery and I always get perms. I desperately need one now but I am concerned it will cause more hair problems down the road. While I am not vain I would certainly like to keep as much hair as possible. I asked my hairdresser and the dr's and no one knows about it one way or another. Has anyone heard anything about it one way or another? thanks.
