Has anyone had an OPEN RNY in the past 6 months? Or scheduled for one?

Hi Peg, I had open RNY with Dr. Randall in Feb. 2006. I was expecting lots of pain and being really sick. There is pain, but it is controlled with morphine pump or pain pills and walking helped so much! I did laps around the unit. I have never been sick since surgery, no vomiting at all. There was one occasion of dry heaves, I still don't know what caused it. I eat slowly and small quatities and nothing with high fat or high sugar. The pain get's better everyday. I found walking once I was home was very helpful. I have never been sorry I had the surgery. Everyday gets easier and now I can't even remember how I used to eat, the changes have become a normal part of my life. Sometimes I don't realize I eat slowly until I see that everyone around me has already finished. My advice is to write down everything you eat in the beginning to be sure you are getting in the right amount of protien. I was very careful with my intake, and I think that's why I have had minimal secondary effects. The only thing that happend was my hair thinned, but it is coming back now. Good luck with your surgery, feel free to email with any questions...you are on your way to an exciting new life.

Hi Claudine, Thanks so much for replying to my question. It was just what I needed to hear. Especially from someone that had Dr. Randall for a surgeon. I am starting to get very nervous and sometimes I ask if I am doing the right thing. Then I work it all out in my mind and move on. I am 55 yrs old and weigh 275 lbs. with a terrible medical history in the family that I am beginning to duplicate. It's got to be done. Thanks for the tip on the food journal. It makes perfect sense. How long were you in the hospital? How have you done with your weight since surgery? I may take you up on the email questioning, if you don't mind. I have done so much research in the past 6 months, but I think it is always talk to someone who has already been there and has been successful. Again, thanks for caring enough to reply. I hope to be able to post as soon as I am feeling up to it. Peg Grassi
