Trying to decide
There are so many factors to consider and ultimately the decision is very personal. What was right for me, i.e. the band, may not be right for you. The bypass, a good choice for many, was never something I considered. I do think having a good surgeon is key - to the procedure - but I also think its important to know what surgery you want before you settle on a surgeon. There are bypass surgeons and there are band surgeons - they may do the other procedure but they often have a bias, a favorite that they would choose for you if it was their choice. But it's not, its YOUR choice. You wouldn't expect a Honda salesman to recommend you buy a Toyota, right?
My best advice is to read all you can and speak to as many post-ops as you can. Go to local support groups - both band groups and bypass groups - and see which lifestyle sounds like the best fit.
Wishing you luck, whatever you decide.
LOVIN' my band,

Mary because of my extreme morbid obesity, past failures at weight loss, coomorbidities, and age my WLS surgeon said that bypass was the only true option for me. I had a lap RNY in December 04 and have lost 156 lbs. I feel terrific and my journey has been great. I recently had PS and hernia repair at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield MA. I was able to coordinate the breast reduction, breast life, panni removal, and ventral hernia repair for the same time. I am now 4 weeks post op and I am thrilled with the results. I have truly taken back my life.
I followed the rules, listened to my surgeon, nutritionist, and weight management doctors.
Good luck with your decision. Question your doctor and have him/her help you decide.
