My doctors have me on a clear liquid diet and drinking 4 oz. of Carnation Instant Breakfast 8 times a day for three weeks. I was wondering if any of you were put on similar restrictions? As I have been reading other posts, it seems that people are eating only after one week of surgery. I am one week post-op and already quite bored with CIB and water.

Everyones doctors are different it amazes me sometimes how different everyones protocol is. I don't have to do liquids at all before and only for the 1st day in the hospital after surgery other than that I am on a pureed diet for a month. I just wanted to say Congratulations on your surgery and Good luck! Gwen

Wow - that seems very restricted. I know that some docs like to really restrict the calories to try and get the maximum loss but that seems crazy - have you figured out how many calories that is? I did not have RNY - my doctor has the same diet for his band and RNY patients I believe. I came home on full liquids whi*****luded: Blended cottage cheese Pudding Protein shakes (or CIB) Cream soups Popsicles Oatmeal anything that was thin and pourable so that the stomach didn't have to work to much. Do you have a nutritionist? Maybe you should give the nut a call to make sure the doctor didn't leave so stuff out (surgeons don't always give the best nutrition advise - mine told me that I could live off of protein shakes for a month after a fil - ya I could live but I would go nuts!) Good luck, Lynn Banded 9/12/05 300/208/140

I was on this regimen for three weeks.. except that we could have some of the smartforme.com products as well which really helped with the whole chocolate, vanilla, strawberry monotony!! (I recommend the chicken broth and hot chocolate) It totally sucked while I was on this regimen but afterwards I was very grateful for it because as much as eating seems interesting when you are first out.. it's a total disappointment and quite hard once you start doing it. I think the CIB allowed my pouch to heal properly and I haven't really had any major problems with foods since. Also, it took a lot of willpower to stick to my guns for three weeks so it defeinately made me stronger in the end. Mostly.. I really feel like it broke me from my attachment to food. When things get hard for me now.. I just think about that time in my life and say, "I did liquid for 3 weeks.. I can do anything!" When I was first out, I too remember reading about people pureeing burrito suprmemes because their surgeons told them "as long as you can eat it with a straw you're ok".. and thinking.. I don't get to do that.. wth? hehe Don't know if this helps but I just wanted to give you another perspective of it.. that if you can do this.. you can do anything!!! congrats on your surgery.. Hi Laurie, Oh boy, we should get together you and I are going thru very similar expiriences...lol. I had my surgery 8/9 and I too have been on the liquids and it's hard but at the end well worth it. you are drinking the CIB 8 x a day, I only do 3x day but I've feeling very lightheaded so I will ask my dr. if I should increase. have you tried the sugar free popcicles ( breyers tropical fruit ) are very good, chicken, beef, vegatable broth are good too and the crystal light. that's what I'm on until 8/31 when I see my dr. again. you should try it if your not allready on it. keep us posted. take care. Congratulation on your surgery. I had my surgery in February and in Worcester, which is where I assume that you had yours, and I was allowed sugar free popsicles, sugar free jello, and broth. I went to the Stop & Shop on West Boylston Street and they have a Boston Chicken. They make chicken noodle soup and I would buy just the broth. Its self serve. I heated it as hot as I could stand it and sip on that. It tasted so good. I also had Adkins Advantage drinks, sugar free also. They are tolerable when they are really, really good. I would double check with the doctor and see if you can't have anything else.

Hi and congrats on your surgery. I had my surgery 8/4 and I am doing the same cib 8x daily. I can say without hestitation I am sick of it. I have had a couple of moments where I said "What have I done to myself?" But I know it is worth it to do this because all this is temporary. I will get to eat again, and I am doing this for my health not for vanity. You will hate some days but in the end, you will be glad you have made it through. Who was your surgeon? Mine was Perigini. I hope you are doing alright, you can do this. Think about how long it took to get to where you are now. We spend a lifetime gaining this weight, we can spend a few months taking it off. Try, sugar free popsicles, broth, and vairiouis juices. I especially like v-8 for the salt I think. You can have juice as long as no sugar is added. I like apple, and grape. Hang in there, read a good book and before you know it, it will be time to start soft foods
