Well, what are you EATING now?

Are you eating a lot of beef?  If so, try grilled chicken or fish.  But make sure you add in more iron supplements.

However, sometimes, high cholesterol is genetic at least in part.  When my eldest nephew was about 12, he was diagnosed with high cholesterol.  Nearly all the white males on both the maternal and paternal sides of my family have this issue.  Yeah, just the white males.  None of the females or any of the males of color have this condition.

What I would do is talk to the doctor *****quested the labs and a clinical dietician who specializes in patients who have had weight loss surgery.

It may well be genetic.  Unless your dietary habits are similar.  But, given that you don't live under the same roof, I doubt that's the case.

Any other family members have it?

I would have no idea.  My family doesn't discuss this kind of stuff.  I only know my mom does cause my wife told me she does.

It's my understanding that saturated fat causes high cholesterol.  As said, beef, lamb - red meat in general is probably something to stay away from.  Oat bran is supposed to help lower cholesterol.  Oatmeal or cheerios may be a good idea for breakfast.  Keep a check on it for sure.  Don't be discouraged if you need medication, it will probably only be temporary as you eat right and loose weight.  Good luck!

One more reason to get into tip top shape. Exercise helps lower it, as does oatmeal and other whole grains. Meds may be needed but by dedicating yourself to it you may not need them anymore, on recheck.

Mine was 489 The bad kind) before I got my band. When I lost my weight it corrected itself. I still needed bp meds though. My bp meds were lowered but not gone until I lost this last 25 pounds. Perfect every since. So...... you may not need meds forever but use them now to avoid complications.

Good luck!

I can tell you my cholesterol improved dramatically 2 years ago...especially my good cholesterol.  My doctor said that was due to all my exercise.  He specifically pointed to the number and said I can tell you are telling me the truth about working out 6 days a week.  Numbers like this don't lie.  And high cholesterol and obesity runs in my family...so I was fighting an up hill battle. But I did it my numbers are normal!!

You also want to get some omega-3 and B3 and fiber supplements.  Foods to add to your diet, red wine, almonds, oatmeal, fish, soy, tomato juice, apples, grapes, beans, okra, eggplant, citrus fruits...basically lots of fiber, lots of whole grains.

Stay away from trans fats and saturated fats

If you smoke...quit

If you drink...cut back.

That's it....

Like the commercials say, there are 2 kimds of cholesterol, the kind you get from food and the kind you get from family.

There is definitely a genetic component to hi cholesterol.

If your eating is good, you may need medication to control it, if your eating is not good (red meats, cheese, eggs, etc) you might try fixing that first.

oatmeal, Cheerios, almonds ... All work to lower it ... Google low-cholesterol diet
