RNY and the Lap band are totally TWO different surgeries and work differently, RNY in most people will yield faster and more weight loss than the lap band because of the malabsorption component built in. The lap band is a bit slower because it needs to be filled properly for most people for it to be effective.

You also need to factor in costs of fills and any needed unfills this IS REQUIRED with most people forever as long as you have your band, and any needed Upper Gis to keep your band in good health and prevent any unnecessary band slippage or other issues.

But there is also costs with RNY too, such a semi-annually lab work for vitamins deficiencies, and any needed iron infusions, etc. so both weight loss surgeries will require additional money to stay successful and complication free.

Lap banders do not have to deal with any potential long term issues of malabsorption or hypoglycemia complications that many bypass people suffer with, if complications occur with the band it can be removed or replaced.

I would still get the band again because it gives you the most normal lifestyle after surgery and you don't get sick from eating foods, it just limits your intake.

With ANY weight loss surgery whether it be the band, RNY or the Sleeve if you don't change your lifestyle and exercise and eat right JUST LIKE NORMAL THIN PEOPLE you can gain weight back, they are all tools.

It's personal decision, I wish you much luck

Edited to add: As of late there are MANY bypass people getting the band fitted over their bypass they are called (BOBs), my new lap band surgeon told me, that he is seeing those that had the Sleeve and RNY done over 3 years ago asking for a band also, more invasive surgeries may yield more weight loss in the beginning most of them fail long term and the pouch (RNY) and the (Sleeve) will eventually stretch and be no longer be effective for most people, so why bother getting your insides rearranged or stomach removed in the first place when the stomach eventually stretches.

I would not have either, the band failed me (almost killed me) and the RNY was something that I was never comfortable with b/c of the issues with the blind stomach and loss of the pyloric valve.

LAP BAND...Keep in mind neither will be an easy way out.  I still have to weigh myself EVERY day and watch what I eat.  There are ways around any surgery if you try hard enough.  Although the band keeps me from being physically hungry, it doesn't keep my MIND from wanting to snack.  I also have to watch SLIDER foods that pass through the band and things like salad dressing that allows food to go through easily. I don't drink for an hour after eating to separate solids and liquids. I haven't had a piece of bread, pasta, pizza crust, etc. . . since my surgery.

I have a friend that had RNY and commented to me that she wished she would've had the band (because she gained her weight back) but while she was saying this, she was eating stuff that I couldn't or wouldn't even attempt to eat and she was DRINKING while eating. Nobody's perfect I get it. I understand it's not always the person, it's sometimes the surgery. I am just trying to get you to understand that it takes a lot more than a surgery to lose weight.  It has been a complete lifestyle change for me. I'll admit I don't always follow the band rules to a "T". I'm only human, but that it why I've been at a plateau for quite sometime....... With this being said, would I do it again knowing what I know now? YES

I have gone from a size 26/28 to a 10/12. I no longer snore which makes my husband a lot less grumpy! I no longer have asthma symptoms. I can cross my legs, bend down to tie my shoes, sit on the floor with my kids, climb stairs, and shop ANYWHERE. I could go on and on...............

VERY greatful for my Lapband, have not been adjusted since 7/10 and have gained 9 lbs due to my falling off the wagon.  Have appt. to be seen this month and get back on track.  Would not do RNY and am hesitant about the sleeve.

I would not wish the band on my worst enemy!  Mine is a POS and a complete waste of money!!!

I would prefer VSG, but would have no hesitation revising to RNY.

Lap band! I personally would not have chosen RNY, I would only get it if the band had to come out and that was the only other WLS I could have. I know 1 person who has been very successful with her RNY and she loves it. Choose what is good for YOU!

Lap Band Lap Band Lap Band!

I love it! It saved my life!

if I couldn't get the Band, I would go with the sleeve. I wouldn't ever do RNY. Personally, it scares the crap out of me. I had 2 friends die from complications - 3 to 4 years after RNY - complications caused by their RNY. And in December I had a really good friend with internal bleeding caused by his RNY. There used to be a memorial page website for all those who have died from RNY. I don't think it's exists anymore. I found it when I was researching my WLS options. It was pages and pages of people's stories as told by their families. Many had blogs that the WLS patient had online - they all dreamed of the same thing - to be normal. I remember one lady, she was in her 40's, a single mom. She posted to her blog that she had horrible abdominal pain and was going to the ER. Two days later, her sister posted that she died. Her last words to her sister were - "I would do it again even knowing what I know now, because I was normal for 2 years of my life." She left her small children. I cried. I knew how she felt about wanting more than anything to be normal. I wanted to walk down the street and not be stared at or spit upon or pointed at. I weighed close to 500lbs when I got my LapBand. Today, thanks to the Band and my wonderful surgeon and his staff, I am normal.
I am better than normal! I'm active and healthy!

The LapBand isn't easy and it does have many rules. It's just a tool. It also depends a lot upon your surgeon's skill to place it properly and support you through your journey. I do think the sleeve may be an easier way to go, but it also has issues, I have found since reading the Sleeve Forum here. Really not one WLS is best for all. You have to find which one works best with you and which one has the lowest risk for death and complications.

At this time in my life, the LapBand was my choice. I was self pay and I have no regrets! BEST $9950.00 I ever spent!

Lastly, I mentioned the memorial page and my friends who have passed because that is what helped me make my final decision. My insurance would have gladly paid for RNY. They refused to pay for the LapBand because my BMI was over 65!

I had the band for 3 years and had nothing but problems. However, I was able to loose almost all of my weight. I revised to the sleeve in September and it was the best decision I've ever made. I love my sleeve. No more acid reflux, sliming, getting stuck, 30+ fills and unfills, puking, not being able to eat dense foods, the list goes on and on. I never considered RNY it scares me. I know too many people personally who have either died or have severe complications with their RNY. The sleeve also scared me. However, I knew I wouldn't be able to keep my weight off on my own. Being completely unfilled for a period of time proved that. After much research, I opted for the sleeve. Another huge consideration for me was my changing insurance. My new insurance wouldn't cover my constant fills and unfills or any complications with the band. I was lucky to get the revison surgery covered before I switched insurances.
The choice is so personal and it is only a tool no matter what you choose. Do your research and be sure before you decide. I'm not bashing the band. I know it works for a lot of people. I just wasn't one of them. Good luck

So glad you were able to revise! The band does NOT work for most ppl long term. That is evident by the few long term bandsters we see on OH (AND IN REAL LIFE!).

~Do your research and be sure before you decide.~

Definately research! Take a look at the revision forum and see how many bandsters are revising FROM the band! If the band was that wonderful.........all those ppl wouldn't want to put theirselves through the pain and expense of yet another WLS now would they?!

~I'm not bashing the band.~

That's right. Telling your band experience is NOT "band bashing". Those with positive experiences tell their positive expereince, those of us with NEGATIVE experiences tell our NEGATIVE experiences. It is what it is.
