IF you had it to do AGAIN which would you do the LAPBAND OR RNY????
RNY on 01/03/12
Hi Carmelita,
In 2007, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor and underwent surgery to partially remove it from the brain stem. My crainial nerves were impacted, so now I have alot of difficulty swallowing, so I have to drink liquids when I eat. Also, the esphogeal, stomach and intestinal valves don't close all the way, so I have some issues related to that, as well.
The VSG was an option, but my surgeon felt that because I needed to drink liquids when I eat (not alot now) that the RNY would be a better option since the VSG was purely restrictive and I might drink through the tool the way I did towards the end with my lapband. He felt that RNY might be easier for me to eat without liquids and I would get the benefit of not asborbing all the calories if I had to eat more because of drinking liquids with meals.
I only have 20 pounds to lose, so of course, I had alot of concerns about the RNY, but when I weighed all the pros and cons given my particular situation, I opted for RNY. I don't really understand why, but I hardly have to drink any liquids to move the food through my esophegus...I suspect it's because I don't have restriction so high up in my stomach, I guess. Maybe, it would have been the same outcome with the VSG...don't know, but I'm at peace with my decision.

Lapband for sure. I gained weight back because of a unfill due to a medical problem not related to the band, but the band is forgiving and once you get tightened back up and get on track you can lose that weight again... but that is my personal opinion everyone has to decide which WLS works for them and they realize its a tool whether its, RNY, Lapband, VSG or DS
If I didn't have my band, I would have no tool except my own willpower. Like many others here, I didn't want my insides rearranged or removed. My life has turned around so much since I got my band. I've had my difficult moments but mostly in the beginning when you're learning what doesn't work the hard way. I had a great surgeon and I am damn lucky my body tolerates the thing. It doesn't work for everyone but I am thankful I made the right choice for myself.
Today's outfit.... Size 16 Lee jeans Large top (no X's!) and a MEDIUM leather jacket. Yeah. I would choose the band again.

5.0 cc in a 10cc lapband (four fills) 1 unfill of .5cc on 5/24/2011.
.5 fill March 2012. unfill of .25cc May 2012. Unfill of .5cc June 2014.
Still with my lapband with no plans for revision. Band working well since
last small unfill.
HW: 267lbs- size 22-24 LW:194lbs CW:198lbs Size 14-16
In a heartbeat. Getting on for 6 years out. I know there are horror stories! But there are for every surgery. Every surgery carries risk and all wls requires a lifestyle change. The band requires more aftercare and also more effort on our part.
I hope I never lose my band because I would not have any other surgery - luckily we Brits seem to have mch better statstics!

Highest 290, Banded - 248 Lowest 139 (too thin!). Comfort zone 155-165.
Happily banded since May 2006. Regain of 28lbs 2013-14. ALL GONE!
But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,
Well, because I went with the lap band the first time, I did have to do it again and I didn't choose either of those, and went with the sleeve.
If you want the surgery which offers the least chance of hitting and maintaining your goal while also offering a high rate of post-op complications which frequently requires further surgeries, then go with the band.
If you want to lose weight, then stack the deck in your favor and pick a more successful surgery. Besides the 2 you mentioned, there are also the VSG and the DS options. Research them all.
Best,
Lindsey

I would do lap band again. It is NOT in any way an easy fix, I found that out.
RNY scares me because of all the rerouting of your intestines and such. But that is me. I am having gaining issues but so are 4 of my friends who had RNY. I know 2 people with RNY who gained almost all of it back as well as a fellow lap-bander who gained most of it back. These things are all tools and if you don't change your eating habits, they are all just expensive temporary bandaids on a big problem.
